In 1991 I bought my first ‘proper’ (to me) boat.

This boat:

Thats me in it, early 90’s off Herne Bay Pier.
We sold it in 96 to move on to a bigger Sportscruiser. By which time we had used it along the Kent Coast between Maidstone (on the River Medway) and Deal, as well as taking it to Lake Annecy in France and Lake Como in Italy.

Fast forward to June 21 when looking casually for a project to follow the motorcycle I had just completed, I stumbled upon what looked like the above mentioned boat on Ebay.
From the pics in the advert we were able to identify it as our actual old boat so went ahead and bought it.
When we arrived to pick it up from Cardiff, I quickly realised that it was still on its original trailer (30 years after I first saw it and it was not new then!). The boat was stored on a steep slope bow down with 2ft of water in the bow. The batteries were flat so we couldn’t raise the leg and bits of the engine were missing.

Took us 2 hours to be ready to tow but we got there. The tyres were newish and we took the hubs off to check the bearings and they looked ok. Got what we could of the water out, hooked up and set off for home in Bournemouth.
And made it with out any issues at all!

On inspection I found that whilst the hull was in excellent condition, the internal wood work was not. ‘Tide’ marks showed that the boat had been full of water for some time but due to the slope it was stored on, the engine was saved from immersion.

So I set about removing that which was rotten.

That turned out to be pretty much all of it.

Including the transom.

The engine was not much better:

The engine needed new cylinder heads, pistons, rings, crank regrind and bearings…. Amongst other stuff but it is now completed and sits in the garage ready to go back in the boat. At least there were a bunch of new parts that came with the boat, namely the water pump, and a complete new exhaust system… so that helped.. a bit.

There then came a period of learning whilst I worked out how to replace the stringers, frames and floor in the boat. Plenty of Youtube vids on the subject as well as books and websites, all with different takes on what to do. I have extracted from all this information an approach that I have gone with which is to simply make the wooden bits from exterior grade hard wood ply, and pressure treated timber all glassed in using a mixture of chopped strand and woven mat.

So far I have managed to replace all the stringers and frames so that the floor is ready to go in.

The transom has been rebuilt also.

The Transom shield and bell housing were not in too bad condition and I have refurbished these so that they are ready to go back on the boat. Just needed new steering pin and seal assembly as well as normal service items.

The leg I have not looked at yet.

So that is the first 18 months.

Biggest problem is that I am working outside so am very weather dependant. Would love to be under cover with the rain we have had last month. We spend the summer in France now so all work on this project is to be done in winter months which is not ideal.

I will add to this as progress is made.

Cool project, I wonder was she built in Cork. If the HIN number has an “E” as the 4th letter then it was built in Cork, Ireland. I think it’s SERE for Cork. My friends Dad worked there.

What a great project. Weirdly I found our old Fletcher Zingaro for sale the other day (sold in 1998). Normandy to Jersey in 22 minutes!

When replacing the steering pin in the sterndrive, make sure you get a stainless one. The OEM is steel and will rust, taking the seal with it eventually

Brief update.....
12 months or so on and the stringers and floor are complete, fuel tank installed and the engine is back in the boat though not all connected yet.
Also new sunpad and seats are constructed but not fitted yet.
Trailer is refurbished.... found to be in remarkably good shape for 40 years of age.
Soon I will just need to replace the leg to have a test run.... and that is a problem.
The leg is about ten years old and looks great from the outside.
Turns out the inards are rusty, lower leg just about turns by hand, top leg is seized solid. Top off reveals rusty interior.
Not sure what to do about it yet!20231213_132611.jpg20221201_135930.jpg20230314_100533.jpg20230314_100611.jpg20231213_153624.resized.jpg20221119_145854.resized.jpg

Great job👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 the most appealing thing is that I reckon 90% of the motorboat forumites started with a small bowrider or similar…mine was a SeaRay 175..so it is all a bit nostalgic 😁 (although not always happy memories 😡)

Should check out Metan Marine in the US. They restore some crackers. Mainly Boston Whalers but other projects in need of a full rebuild.
