Yup, We should avoid all but essential travel, and can not stay away overnight even in second homes. Yes I know it doesnt say boats, but its clear what theyintend.

Where is the overnight restriction, I didn't spot it from a quick read

Overnight stays and holidays away from primary residences will not be allowed- including holidays in the UK and abroad. This includes staying in a second home, if you own one, or staying with anyone you do not live with or are in a support bubble with. There are specific exceptions, for example if you need to stay away from home (including in a second home) for work purposes.

I have also received the MDL email (twice!) and will need clarification around what they plan to do.

I am in the position where I have had substantial work carried out on our old boat (new fuel tanks in a Sealine F36) and it is in the process of being sold. The surveyor is booked for 9th November and a lift on 17th November for a sea trial.

During the last lockdown the yard allowed a 3rd party in to work on the boat on a few occasions so I am hopeful that they will allow the surveyor to do his stuff. The question mark remains regarding the lift and sea trial. I suspect they will want to lift the boat but I can’t see how we would be allowed to trial the boat for the new owners.

It will be interesting to see what they say tomorrow when I call them.

Thank you (and to Cathy*) rather ironically the preceding paragraph talks about limiting travel which in some cases is the exact opposite of what an overnight ban will achieve

Surely the "stay at home" bit of the guidance will reduce travel.

The guidance as published suggests we are returning to the restrictions in place in May and June. i.e. you could exercise and visit open spaces but pubs were shut and you were expected to be home each night.

Now the weather is forecast to improve from Tuesday so I was intending to book the rest of the week off but from Thursday onwards the law requires me to drive to and from the boat each day.

In doing so the risks are being increased not the other way around.

Stuffed we are. Leisure businesses have to close. That I think includes marinas. They can still operate, as can boatyards, but marinas will probably close access to their customers as they did in the first Lockdown.

Visiting your boat to perform maintenance, more than likely while working in isolation, should pose no risk to spreading disease. And yet the government request and intent is clear: stay at home. I’m desperate to visit my boat as I have just a few weeks to prepare for relaunch. After Wednesday I expect to be confined to home. A delayed relaunch is likely the only option. I will comply.

We are in this position as some around us have allowed virus transmission to continue. I see it everywhere - no distancing and lowered masks where masks are required. I cannot complain about the behaviour of others if I then proceed to break the spirit of the lockdown myself. That’s my decision.

Just read the New National Restrictions from 5 November. I found that both my wife and I are clinically vulnerable, and I expect most other forumites are as well. Clinically vulnerable people are anyone over 60 (regardless of medical condition). So I must be very careful to avoid almost everyone, even though I feel fit as a fiddle. So tomorrow I am off to the marina to add some extra mooring lines and remove some woodwork to refurbish in my shed during lockdown. No point wasting lockdown time.

I had been planning to going sailing on Thursday, but that is no longer going to be possible. Monday is going to be blowing 40+ knots. Tuesday is about 15+ knots with some rain (I hate sailing in the rain) , so I will give that a miss. Wednesday I am booked to do some chores for my parents in law under the watchful eyes of SWMBO. Thats why I cannot get a sail on before locdown. Must say I did enjoy the sail on Monday. (see photos at posts #215 and #221 Just pictures).

Generally most sailors do not sail at this time of year, unlike the the previous lockdown, so in reality we are not as badly affected. That is unless you are one of the rare owners who have their boat out of the water and actually work on it before there is less than a fortnight before it is due to be launched by the end of April or May.

It's about a thousand miles away, as it says under my name. No doubt you will just do as you wish but blame everyone else for not following the rules.

Clearly people's circumstances and outlook vary and hence my post you have quoted.

However the idea that typical yotties in November would have any effect on the effectiveness of the restrictions if fanciful. Especially as not long after they are relaxed we are apparently going to be able to travel across the country to mix inside with other households
