Daft enough to take a photo of it.
Daft enough to post it here.
Daft enough to bring attention to it.

If it walks like a duck ..............

I only mentioned it because the fact that I leave the handle on the winch generated some comments following an earlier post on this thread (#805).

I've been sailing for nigh on three decades now, and barring the first two/three years (and several dropped/lost winch handles) I've always done this.
I find it convenient and practical/efficient.
As I sail on my own 95% of the time, where's the harm?

Please enlighten me, why would this make me a bad sailor?

PS: and given the wording of your post, let me just add this: twat!
And no, this is not an insult, but rather a statement of fact.

Fender socks, coiling rope, mechanical watch, the angle you wear your Tilley hat....these are all essentials in being a good sailor....we cannot accept behavior below these standards

There are a lot of reasons why its a shabby practice. Not knowing that is one of them. But your boat, your way.

Lines can get caught around them. You have to take the handle out to tack anyway. It hurts if you bash yourself on one in a bumpy sea. Simply an avoidable hazrd. Yadda, yadda.

I was taught a lot of sailing on yachts with crew where that kind of thing was avoided by simply removing the handle when not in use. It's ingrained and I've been happy to pass that on to many others.

As you do so much of Billy no mates sailing, most of that probably doesn't matter......your boat!!
