If you only want to watch live uk tv through your laptop, then use filmon.com and no vpn is needed, especialy if the wifi signal is iffy.

+1 for Filmon, which can also be used to record TV programs. If bandwidth a problem, most popular TV series are available for downloading as Torrents - not that I'm suggesting anyone should use that route:)

I don't need torrents, but to clarify a little, as I live in Greece we download filmon to a usb stick, then simply plug into the tv to watch, we have used filmon for years, however they have now restricted recording to one hour unless you pay, it works out at around 5 euro a month, ie, you can record as much as you want, download it to stick and record again, to be quite honest I think this is a reasonable charge, especialy if you consider that the vpn will half your wifi speed, also you can have multiple email accounts and simple use filmon to record an hour, I player and catch up away from the uk is a poor service compared to filmon IMHO.

Davy_s I've not clocked any degradation in wifi speed here in Kas Marina using VPN. I'm getting 54Mbs with and without VPN engaged. That's the standard here.

I am surprised that you are getting such a speed! my land line connection is 24mps, if I use ookla to test, I am getting around 10mps which is fine for filmon, if I use expat shield and I player etc, the speed goes down to 5mps, this is with Otenet.gr.

Davy_S. Just for fun I've done a screen shot showing Hotspot Shield engaged and logged in to the marina wifi here at Kas. Check out the pop up showing 54Mbps. I guess that I should consider myself lucky. Speed with Hotspot Shield engaged.jpg

I am not an internet wizard, if I click on my wifi connection, similar to the one you posted, it shows that I am getting 150Mps! I pay for 24mps, and ookla shows around 10mps. If you are indeed getting that speed, I am insanely jealous!:)

Just a follow up and thank-you for the advice. I have decided to go with an Avtex without satallite. Three yeas warranty and very good resale value (second hand Avtex TVs are in high demand and fetch good prices) make it the most sensible option.

I'm now faced with the additional task of finding an aerial. I see there are quite an array of different types has anyone got any sensible advice on which ones to go for?

I'm assuming at sea level in most situations reception would be either excellent or non existent assuming they operate on line of sight?

Any advice would be helpful and it seemed like a good place to post this question...

I installed a 29" LG. It was the largest I could go that I can power via 12v. It is actually a 19v TV and draws around 3 amps, which is pretty good for such a large TV. I bought a 12v to 19v step-up transformer that regulates a constant 19v. For the record I installed 12v to 12v regulators for my LED light circuits. Again, these were Chinese ebay jobs. Both of them are aluminium heat-sinks bought through Alibaba whilst I was in Thailand but you can get them on ebay.

For the record I run my movies and music through a 12v Intel NUC computer and run three external hard drives, also using the 12v-12v regulator. To watch a film I'm pulling 3 amps for the TV, 1 amp for the computer, 0.3 amps for the hard drive and 1.2amps for the car stereo. This could be reduced significantly by using the TV speakers instead of the car stereo and loading up a film to watch via USB stick plugged straight into the TV, but I figured for 2 hours 5.5amps isn't so bad.

No you are not getting 54Mbps, that's the link speed chosen by your wifi adapter & the access point as shown by Windows. Your actual download speed is shown above that as 31.2KB which is 249.6Kbs (8 x 31.5) :(
