A brief(ish) precis of a total mystery.
Garmin 4010 chartplotter connected to a rather ancient but still working genuine Raymarine GPS receiver.
Also connected to the same Raymarine receiver was an equally old R70 both chartplotters functioning perfectly at the same time.
The owner of this venerable set up decided that he would quite like the chartplotters to be totally independant from each other,so additional GPS receiver was purchased from ebay which promptly arrived and was installed.
The R70 plotter remained connected to the existing GPS receiver and continued to function ie. to detect satellites and get a fix.
The Garmin 4010 was connected to the " new" Ebay GPS receiver but resolutely refused to work .........ie get fix.
We checked volts and all sorts on combinations of wiring ,able detect that small small voltage swing on the NMEA output
We tried moving the new GPS around the boat wondering if the signal was being blocked physically or somehow being interfered with by adjacent electronics.
Eventually we found that by holding the "new" receiver at arms length and keeping the cable taunt, very briefly the Garmin 4010 would get a fix before losing it a few seconds later.
Contacted to seller who suggested we had not connected their receiver correctly, returned to the seller (at our expense) the mushroom, was returned a few days later with the message that they could find absolutely nothing wrong and again remarked our wiring must be in error .
We tried installing again with exactly the same outcome, pointed out to the seller that reconnection to the old GPS receiver produced an instant fix on the Garmin 4010.
Eventually after several months pointless faffing , we purchased different GPS receiver from ebay and on connection it worked instantly even though it was lying hidden under the flybridge dashboard when powered up.
Contacted the ebay seller regards a refund , which initially they were very reluctant to do, offering a 50% refund still claiming it was our installation that was at fault.
Eventually received a full refund.
All we wanted was a refund or replacement to get on with life.
Do recall having a Ebay clone mushroom fail after about 13 months, a few years ago, contacted the seller, more in hope than anticipation.
Answer that came back !
Chuck the old one in the bin, a new one is already in the post.
