See when I select UK on Dot VPN it now connects to a server in the Nederland?

Is this a cunning plan to prevent people outside the UK watching U.K. TV?

If so there is always another way. ;)

No cunning plan to prevent expats from accessing UK TV.

Rather a cunning plan by Dot VPN to increase their income.

All free user accounts are now routed through servers in Holland, which makes it impossible to get UK TV.

Apparently, paid for premium user accounts can still be routed to a server in the U.K. so users will still be able to access UK TV.

I suggested to Dot VPN, standby for the law of unintended, consequence.

Rather than take out a premium account users will move to another free provider of which there are many.

More likely it was a direly needed measure to help UK residents (legally) avoid the recent introduction of one of the worst data gathering laws introduced in any democracy. Nobody in their right mind wants to route their traffic through a UK exit point anymore, and instead it is now a viable business model to provide VPN services to UK residents that allows their traffic to exit in countries who do not want to collect your entire browsing history (such as Holland).

Of course that's probably less interesting to those who already escaped the UK and are merely looking to consume its television content ;)

Sounds unlikely as VPNs allow users to choose the location of the server. So you pick UK when you want BBC programs and select somewhere else such as Holland if you are more interested in hiding traffic from the UK government.

It does look more like a way to encourage people to upgrade to a paid service instead of continuing with the free service. I find it odd that they don't just disable the UK server in their list but allow it to be selected and then route via Holland. Perhaps they thought people would be put off trying their product if it was obvious up front that it lacked BBC iPlayer access.

The new law will only catch completely stupid terrorists (the type most likely to be contenders for a Darwin award). Any with half a brain will simply use a decent VPN, probably combined with TOR and encrypted email (plus a few other easy options to confuse things even further if very paranoid). Or they could go down the low tech route and become members of parliament. :D:D
