The One Ton Cup was an old trophy awarded for a rating class under the old International Rule of the early 1900s. If was competed for in 6ms, I think.

It fell into disuse and was reallocation in the mid 1960s for level rating racing, first under the RORC rule and then under IOR. Typical boats were over 36ft and weighed a lot more than one ton (six plus as a rule). The success of the One Ton class spawned a whole range of sub-divisions from Mini-ton up to Two-Ton. Only the quarter tonners weighed in at anything like a ton.

Thanks for clearing that up then ;-)

It's no wonder that "outsiders" have difficulty understanding what this sport is all about when we have such intricate and confusing ways of describing everything involved in sailing. I know other sports and activities also have their own secret language, codes and abreviations - but does anything else come even close?

PS I always thought the Won Ton Cup was used to hold a variety of Chinese Cuppa Soup.

The cup is actually called the "Circle de Voile de Paris" trophy, but during the 1920's it was regularly awarded for a race between yachts called "Le Tonneau" which had keels of exactly one tonne. So the cup acquired the name "One Ton Cup" which has lasted till today.

I was just amused by the title "One Ton Women"; it might have been read as a reference to extremely fat ladies, but whoever wrote the headline assumed that we would all know at once what was meant!

Back in the eighties there was a one-tonner (IOR rating 30.5ft) called "Rodeo" which, I think, was the first all-woman crew in the one ton cup. They were slower upwind than the rest of the fleet (less weight on the rail) but faster downwind (less weight). As Dawn Reilly said about the crew of Heineken individually women are lighter, but less strong, than men but, working as a team, they can be as effective.
