Re: The levers of power

are changing. Years ago you controled the broad swathe of the people, using religion, class, education, law and flumery. The levers being the church, your betters, the beaks and plods and the press.

Mr Blair has discovered that he can do better than this. Computers, if HMG ever get them working, and law can control the majority of individuals. Centralized record keeping, CCTV/ Speed Cameras/ Number Plate Readers, ID cards, recording your address changes and DNA are the new levers of power. Reporting your yachty plans to the CG is just the start for us.

Think how the fear of crime is stoked up to make all of this stuff acceptable.

Think of how many fixed penalty offences have sprung up along with the "new crimes". How many registers of offenders, naming and shaming and ASBO's.

Remember the days when a police officer was enpowered to weigh up a situation and give someone a bollocking. Not now days. Now it's all written down and if it's written down it looks like it needs actioning.

This is about controling you and me your hard nut's still don't give a toss.

Just to go back to this thing about ID cards, Graham said "9/11 would not have happened if Americans carried ID cards".

Why? The people involved presumably had sufficient ID, passports, and credit cards etc to enter the US and take flying lessons. I really cannot see how how an ID (genuine or fake) will stop petty crime, let alone a major terrorist conspiracy.

Anyway I once got into the UK without a passport. I was booked on the final evening flight to Heathrow I explained my predicant to the Brussels control people in very bad French. Without even hearing me out he replied in excellent English that he was happy to let me board, but doubted if I'd get through UK immigration. Mildly pissed Scotsmen minus their passports may be a regular occurance over there. I went anyway.

I explained the problem at Heathrow, and the guy there asked if I had any other ID. Would a driving licence be OK? "Only if it's a Northern Ireland one" - they had photos on them at that time.

I pulled out a jazz club membership card that had my photograph. "I'm very sorry sir, Her Majesty's Government does not recognise membership of Ronnie Scott's as an entitlement for entry to the UK", or some similar sounding officialese.

The only other card with my photo was a security pass to the HQ of a large UK company. "That's fine, sir. Just remember to bring your passport next time".

It was only as I walked through I realised that the card did not even have the company name on it, let alone the location - precisely because it was a high security building.

I think I'd bored him suffiently to get through.

However, I somewhat suspect that other UK citizens with slighly different accents or skin complexions may have had rather more difficulty in similar situations.

Regards

He is in fact an old time Stalinist

Re: baseless ranting

Speaking of woods and trees, I didn't say I agreed with the things he proposes to do or has done either, if you fail to recognise the objectiveness of my post it doesn't mean I'm a buffoon!

Ok, fair cop I apologise for that bit, but you started it /forums/images/icons/frown.gif. I always get a bit heated when forum discussions turn into slanging matches, I thought personally Dave had some very good points.

I misunderstood your standpoint with regard to 'token disabled', even though I actually do lean to that belief with regard to Blunkett more often than not.

As a fun 20 minutes, enter Blunkett into the BBC news search engine, it is a frightening ride.

Re: baseless ranting

I am truly honoured to be in the company of so many perfect people - people who have never bonked whilst single with someone married - people who have never used their influence to fix something for a boy or girl friend. People who will never acceed to carring ID cards like the rest of Europe simply because they are British - People who have never fiddled their expenses even a little bit.

This is a truly wonderful place - a place of angels!

Sgeir I agree with what you say but my comment about 9/11 not happening if Yanks had ID cards was tongue in cheek.

I think they do carry them as it goes but as you say it would not have made a blind bit off difference one way or the other.

I was once crossing a border in Central America when some officious local policeman wanted my name .I filled in the form Mr D Duck .He replied "Your not Mr D Duck ,he comes through this checkpoint every week I know him and your not him"

I hastilly explained that D Duck was a very common name in UK which satisfied him sufficiently to get us across the border

"People who have never fiddled their expenses even a little bit" - well that last one's a criminal offence, and has been since Victorian times, so if he's done that there's no way he can stay as Home Sec.

I happen to think he's a fascist as well, but that's by the by

Having been a civil servant for 20+ years I can tell you it is true - contractors do not come under civil service pay and conditions.

Bambola

I don't think anyone here claims to be an angel. The difference is that we all know and accept that if we're caught we have to face the consequences.

Re: Emotive subject...

Fifteen years ago I was involved in a campaign to get civil servants ( prison, customs, tax office etc.) on a compulsory posting to the Isle of Wight four return ferry tickets a year, the same as local government employees (police, teachers, probation service etc.).

The local MP criticised me in the press but failed to point out the fact that he got 12 ferry and first class rail travel tickets to London a year for him and his wife.

Re: baseless ranting

I was only asking if there was anyone on this series of posts who has never exagerated or overclaimed on their expenses - or take a biro belonging to their employer home?

Just curious

Bet I do not get one reply to that question............

DUH! I think I'm losing my grip what with all the ranting. But thanks anyway - Graham said similar above. Personally I think ranting extremists should be mercilessly put down.

Re: baseless ranting

Well I'll answer, I'm guilty of at least one of your charges.

As for innocent until proven guity, the fact that he's offered to pay it back suggests what he thinks. However in order to be fair maybe it should be taken to a proper trial.
