It seems to me that more and more trivial offences are becoming criminal. This even applies to such simple things as failing to keep to the small boat channel when entering Pompey or failing to report a minor boating incident.

When I were a lad, a criminal offence was pretty serious and only the hard nuts amongst us had them. A criminal offence meant that you had to be fingerprinted (probably DNA'd these days) and so on.

Is this just for our own good?

It seems strange to me that virtually every day new legislation is being announced for things that are already adequately covered by existing legislation. Surely better to make what exists work effectively and enable good practice rather than go on what seems to me to be a legislative spree. Perhaps a case of the blind leading the blind?

most of what concerns you is down to the regular media cry of 'this must never happen again'after every accident.

the rest of it is british officials being over-zealous in enforcing ec regulations. they have the excuse that they didn't make up the regulations but boy do they enjoy enforcing them to the letter!

This Gov will have acheived just shy of 800 new crim legislation pieces by the time we re-elect them.
Appalling.
Too ranting to have a rant. Gone off to the wine rack huffing again.....

You have summed up my feelings completely jimi.

The police are allready overwhelmed without Blind Pugh dreaming up more ways to turn us into criminals.

Um, but would you have noticed the rules when you were a lad? I think there were plenty of rules, and ration books, queues, blackouts, fuels rationing, hardly any telly programs droning on about the rules, hardly anything that worked other than Meccano and also priest holes. Okay the priest holes a bit before your time possibly. The rules included no burglary, of course, though i am not at all sure how much stuff was worth nicking, in our house anyway.

However, i do agree. Unfortunately, perhaps since we won wars, perhaps from before then, we assume that our assumption of miltary powers was the right hthing to do, and have carried forward this tradition with every single position of authority. I envy certain aspects of French life, and in particular their lack of an interfering busybody" or "headmistressy" gene. Nutcaser roller bladers on the promendaes draw huge crowds, and would simply be stopped in the UK. In france, in certain placves (like the Defense) they have a special surface, just for the roller bladers. Outlawed in our parks, though, and probabkly omn the streets as well. Sames as dining outside alfresco - big london clampdown on that.

Nice on this fence..

Ah, but it's the same in London really. Don't try rollerblading in Hyde park, as some uniformed git will get narked at you. However, really nice roller blading surfaces have been put down nearby - The Mall, and Park Lane, Hyde Park Corner etc.

The motorists are really enthusiastic, and hoot and wave at you in admiration, and far more exciting whizzing in and out of traffic than avoiding slow moving horses and motorised wheelchairs in Hyde Park

um i wd like to agree. But in france, frexample, i ave never ever been stopped on a Go-ped petrol scooter. Take a look at the "petrol scooter UK" forum and it seems all they talk about is getting stopped by the police in the UK.

Did you not see that last little bit in the God Bless Er's speech - ranting is to be outlawed.

Particularly ranting about anything Mad Bad Dave is up to [and you'd better not mention his lover's nanny either, that's next on the satute book!]

in 1970 the parliament counsel office, who draft parliament's bills, employed 17 full-time barristers. Today, there are "about" 60 and I learn from Robin Cook's book "Point of Departure" that the PCO is required to substantially increase their staff as they were holding up "New Labour's legislative programme".

that's not including the entirely separate bunch of lawyers in Edinburgh who are drafting the outpourings (after devolution) from Scottish Parliament .... no doubt, Wales can add a few too ...

Got a cine film somewhere of eccentric uncle filming an early RV they'd hired to see France in, going round Arc de Triumph in Paris - him walking behind, filming RV with rear door open and horns blaring as vehicles swerved around him. This was in 60's or 70's though. Not as mad as it is now, but still made quite an impression on me when a kid!

UK authorities are just idiots, as we often comment on here.

I have a friend whose car broke down in a tunnel on the Périphérique at Paris.

He got a primus out and made himself a cup of tea while waiting.

Have you noticed that most new "crimes" although they carry the threat of a prison sentence normally end up with a hefty fine, now call me a cynic but that smacks of tax by stealth,, hit Mr & Mrs Average for a few bob everytime, never mind that you are crimilising ordinary people. JUST GET THE CASH!!!!

mmmm we are being snowed under by over legislation... We have a law against racially motivated violence.. however I fail to see why any violent acts cannot be prosecuted under previous legislation.. As far as I can see the legislation specifying motive is no more effective than the orginal legislation just we seem to have to label each crime with a tag under which it is prosecuted.. which I really don't see the point of.. I would have thought motives for crime would be explored during any trial and a murder is a murder what ever the motive and equally vial.

I also happen to think that huge legislative programmes are there to provide jobs for the boys.. and I hate to say this but it is mostly boys.. still... also and probably most importantly it keeps the MPs / MSPs / MEPs busy and makes it look like the govt institutions are hard working and effective when in reality I have a sneaking suscpiscion that they are in ineffective and no longer have any real power... or in the case of MSPs and MEPs never had it in the first place..

Seriously disillusioned of the Highlands.. retreating to bottle of Chilean Red... it's the antioxidants honest..

Happens in the UK too, happy to say.

Mega traffic jam/gridlock on M5, M4 junction some years back (M5 siezed due to weight of traffic, and accident on M4 bridge over Severn). Bank Holiday weekend.

People sitting on top of cars taking in the view, and families got out folding tables and chairs and started having picnics. very unBritish in some ways, but very British in stiff upper lip, WWII bombing raid fashion - no stressed out people, no aggro, and complete strangers in cars next door invited for tea and sandwiches by complete unknowns :)

Is this all a ploy from 'New Labour' To confuse us all so much that at the next election we are brainwashed so much with all their recent bills, we might even vote for them?

Sorry I think definitely NOT! I like probably all of you here am sick to the teeth of these hideous words that I am hearing so much today called 'Political Correctness'.

Was it George Orwell or someone who made a film titled 'Big Brother'.....I remember scoffing at it....But not now!

That's because you'll pay. It's easy to enforce because you're such a citizen. Me too, unfortunately. But I'm not putting up with this identity card malarky. If I renew my passport and they send me one I'm going to send it back marked, 'not required around here.' I am born and bred English and I don't need a piece of paper to tell me so, nor to differentiate me from putative Arab terrorists (I know this last is probably considered racist. Sorry all but it's true!)

Are you making a deposit to the national DNA bank?
We used to be a free country, now we have more CCTV than anyone else, your watched by speed cameras, he now wants us to have ID cards ( includes your finger prints? ), have everybodies DNA put on record, we have regulations for this, regulations for that, it's wrong to say this, or even that because it must affend some group some were.
When are they going to introduce micro chipping for everyone, then you could have sensor in the kerb and charge automatically foy jaywalking, monitor who went into which shop, to monitor shoplifting, with a bit of work you could check who was driving the car, you could then charge there micro chip direct from camera for speeding, money raising is endless, cann't be far away.
Is the answer to form our own terrorist group / cell, then we would not have to sign up for all the governments good ideas for our health and preservation, or donation scam's.

Brian
