Re: Emotive subject...

Principle's exactly the same .. and those in high office should be expected to display a higher standard of behaviour .. oh .. and Bonkit's civil service employees would have suffered immediate dismissal for a similar abuse of expense priviledge.

How do you get on with the language ??

I often think of moving, but having to learn another language and the customs/laws etc. of another country at my age put me off.

Re: baseless ranting

I didn't say I liked him or say he was a good home secretary, I was merely pointing out that the facts in the post were incorrect. Which they are. Do you deny that?

Speaking of woods and trees, I didn't say I agreed with the things he proposes to do or has done either, if you fail to recognise the objectiveness of my post it doesn't mean I'm a buffoon!

The reason I posted is because I'm fed up with factless rants about people's misconceptions. I enjoy informed debate.

In fact I think he's a dangerous idiot, but calling him the "token disabled idiot" is not acceptable its offensive, he got there by being a rutheless b*****d not by being blind

Re: Emotive subject...

Having spent 6 months in the civil service as a contractor I can safely say that that isn't necessarily true.

You could argue that he should resign and that he shouldn't have done it, but saying that its like he robbed a bank is stupid.

Re: Emotive subject...

Perhaps the Forumites should form into an ethnic minority and then claim that the requirement to have identity card is a breach of our Human Rights - seems to work quite well for the "travelling fraternity".

Can you imagine that each time a bunch of travellers get moved on from an illegal site they will be contacing the authorities to advise them of their new address - I think not. And will they get fined £1000 for not advising of the change of address????????????? - fat chance.

Re: Emotive subject...

Disagree completely. If some one abuses the expenses procedure then that is grounds for immediate dismissal. Whether it is used or not seems to come down to an individual's discretion. But have no doubt .. some one in the department that DB is responsible for will have suffered that fate.

Re: Emotive subject...

However money is stolen, there is no difference. In fact it could be said that abusing trust is far worse than robbing a bank as two crimes are commited there.

Heh heh, life needs its little challenges )

Ok, the language is very different to any other language that uses something near the same alphabet. Closest similarities are Estonian (comments from Nigel Luther...?) and Hungarian.
But once you pick up the basics its quite easy to survive. So handling tasks like finding something to eat, drink, staying the night somewhere, shopping in general, become relatively simple.
Also, enough people speak good English that it makes you a little lazy to learn the local lingo!
Sailing terms are another matter. In English it's another language by itself, so i tend to sail "in Finnish" if in company...

Laws are easy. Just have to realise that they are different in detail, even though the broad intent might be the same. So be sensible and just pick them up as you go along, being careful to not do anything too outrageous too soon )

Customs... can be fun to accept new ones and also to introduce your own brand of English ones )

Culture is probably the most difficult to learn because the differences are often not obvious. So the words can be the same but the meaning can be very different!

Age...? I'm 50 next year (BIG party!) and been here seven years... It's never too late )

Re: baseless ranting

Hurrah - I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks that Blunkett is a Nazi control freakery W*****er obsessed with implementing a police state.

At least its good to know that given the number of times the words terrorist and Blunkett have been used in this thread, its probably been picked up by his e-mail snoopers.

So once again for the man hiding in the bushes - F**K you blunkett.

Ahh that feels better.

Anyway I'm off home now past all the shiny new CCTV stylee cameras on the A13, Now I wonder what they're for.

Re: baseless ranting

Just read that the only personal contact DB had with a certain visa application was to check that it was filled in correctly...

Do they issue those forms in Braile or is the blindness just a big con to get sympathy and allow his pet dog into the commons...?

Re: Emotive subject...

I think that Blunkett misusing a perk is as bad as robbing a bank. It represents an erosion of standards at the highest level. To subsequently throw up his hands and say 'Sorry, my mistake - I'll repay the money' does not redress the problem to my satisfaction.

The man is a dangerous threat to basic human rights, and very few of his off-the-hoof proposals will improve our security or cut crime. The sooner he goes, the better.

Re: Emotive subject...

You know why MPs won't push him too hard on the expenses, because with a few honourable exceptions (my MP is one) they are ALL at it. By the way if I find out you've got a lot of Scuttlebutters drunk with my 68 pee there will be hell to pay.

"Regulating every aspect of our lives will surely lead to organised civil disobedience, or worse. Is there no way of stopping the onslaught?"

Agree with you on this. People often say that you need rules to prevent anarchy but even peaceful citizens will come out fighting if suffocated by this growing blanket of legislation.

It is said that ignorance of the law is no defence but how can we seriously be expected to keep pace with it all?

MPs, the very people who pass legislation, get away with breaking the rules by arguing that they acted in good faith. Doesn't seem to apply to the rest of us.

Re: Emotive subject...

Actually the two are indeed exactly equal. Both are theft. Then and only then, the distinction begins to blur, because Flunkett's theft has other tags to be added. Like abuse of office.

Actually, I don't mind ID cards because I have seen them used reasonably in other countries.

Would they be used reasonably over here?? Hmm...

What I don't understand is how they (labour politicians) can say that the reason she miraculously got here visa only 19 days after being told it was going to take at least a year was because they started a fastrack system to reduce the back log before charges started.
Did they suddenly employ extra staff to do the "fastrack"? Did they relax the vetting maybe allowing any scum into the country? Maybe "fastrack" is just a word they use which means the civil servants dealing with immigration got off their fat arses and actually started doing some work?

How did this so called "fastrack" system work?

Re: baseless ranting

I bow to your superior ranting oh Lord and Rant-Meister. I am (even in full flight) completely out-gunned by your knowledge and rant-ability!

Very interesting and very scary.

And one more this for whatsisname...I am proud to cause offense to useless people I don't like. I hate all this PC crap. And I'm not sorry (and never will be) I called Flunkett the token disabled person - in fact I was going to use another adjective, but would probably have been "moderated".
