Re: blunkett

I strongly disagree that this is a winging poms debate, although I agree with your sentiments re Boris and also in having pride in our country. MPs enjoy many perks which we do not, including a generous pension fund underwritten by the tax payer whilst Brown has taxed our funds to the tune of an extra £5bn pa. I think we can expect a high level of integrity in return, especially from the leaders. When we catch them cheating, they should face the consequences.

The terrorist threat to which they so often allude is beginning to sound like an excuse to justify further erosion of our civil liberties. If they really wanted to fix the problem then far more priority should have been given to solving the Palestinian issue, which seems to lie at the heart of Islamic grievances elsewhere. Instead, they chose a soft target and took us into an illegal war using phoney excuses with the consequences that we've now stirred an even bigger hornets nest for the future.

The original point I was making was that we are all in danger of criminilisation through petty offences, and nothing I've read so far suggests otherwise.

Re: blunkett

Is there space in La Rochelle , think we should all move there, because it looks a far better country to live in, compared to the view we have over here.

The problem most have I think, is that they are proud of the country we had, not what we are being pushed into.

Re: blunkett

Well said. We and America have only our selves to blame for the hatred of the Islamic race. It's not a difficult concept that the Palastinions live in Palasine and always have. I'd give it all back to them.

But do not forget we lost many troops trying to defend Palastine for the Palastinions back in the 40's / 50's.

£5 Billion...and counting!

Maybe we have just found the root of the Blunkett sacrifice (err, I meant diversion). I read today that the cost of the Aghan / Iraq conflicts is £5 Bn. Now I read somewhere else that the cost of putting right all the pension crisis problems in the UK was somewhere around £2 Bn. So thats two and a half times as much has been wasted on a conflict that we were lied to about. These b@stards need to be brought to account through a) the ballot box and b) impeachment.

Re: £5 Billion...and counting!

It has cost alot more than £5Bn to some. Lets not forget that in order for Blair, Bunkett and Brown to futher thier own personal fortune and power base, they willingly sent inoccent soldiers to their deaths. Although I'm a bit pissed that all this tax money has been wasted lets not forget that christmas is coming and some mothers will be having christmas dinner without their sons, some children without their fathers. Now THAT is a crime from any perspective you wish to view it from.

Re: baseless ranting

I think this is being orchestrated by the husband of Plonkett's ex lover. As such there is the distinct possibility that the reports are deliberately designed to put him in the worst possible light.

I am somewhat disappointed, but not really surprised, that the media are taking such an aggressively anti-Plonker approach on this. Yes his behaviour is appalling and he should not be allowed to continue in office - but as you say I'm sure there is much worse happens in the cabinet - not least the PM himself

Re: Emotive subject...

Apart from the question of violence, in law, yes. Both contravene the theft act.

Theft: the dishonest (I'm not entitled to it and I know it) appropriation of property (a train ticket) belonging to another (HMG) with the intention of permanently depriving him of it. (I've been caught, so I'll give it back. Yes, I'm sure the jury will accept that)

The prosecution rests, Milud.

Re: Emotive subject...

OK so we all agree don't want to stay in Iraq, Don't want more laws, want the country for the people so we need houses, roads (to go to work on) and not pay farmers money to keep fields green but not produce food. Speeding in dangerous places should be jumped on but a little speeding late at night by scuttlebutters is OK. WE want to be able to anchor anywhere have more marinas and less objections due to site of sientific interest, do we want to keep duty free red diesel?
Obviously less taxes and less civil servants. Now if we do all agree with this -or do we? who can we vote for? I can see anyone other than self seeking power hungry politicians that don't tell fibs just don't understand the meaning of the word TRUTH. Obviously we have to form the scuttlebutt party. NOW WHAT DO WE ALL AGREE ON and is it JIMI or TWISTER KEN for pm?

Re: Emotive subject...

When I lived in Somerset,it was well known that if you drank in a certain pub, getting the name and address etc of any car owner was easy because it was the local police waering hole.

More recently, somebody gave the car registration numbers of all cars visiting the Huntingdon animal research centre to the animal liberation front sadists. It was obviously somebody else who could access the National Police Computer.

Now, it seems, all our most confidential information is to be put on a data base accessible to a certain number of normal, human, corruptible people....doctors, nurses,Inland Revenue, IT whizz kids, social workers, other authorities, etc etc.

I do not normally contriute to this sort of debate, but this one worries the hell out of me.

Basically, I have nothing for/against ID cards, but they will do nothing to deter terrorists, who will simply register, or illegals, who will buy forgeries:meanwhile the rest of us will have to pay £85 (or £340 for a normal family) just to have a piece of plastic which will do nothing of really practical value.

What a sad country we have let ourselves become.

I would consider emigrating but, if you can dig deep, France - for exapmple - has as many problems as we have - in spite of the assertions of the emigres - most of whom I have met do not have the skills to dig very deep, so live in a blinkered world where they avoid UK problems and do not qualify to share the problems of French nationals.

My basic trade is the French language and I have many real French freinds, with whom we exchange visits and very regular 'political and sociological' emails. The French are as worried about the future of their under-funded health and education systems as we are. Immigration is also a problem, which does not touch expats, most of whom never read a French newspaper..

If you want to know the true picture of France, an emigre, cabalistic, non linguistic Brit is the last person to consult.

Having spent a lot of time in a lot of places, in spite of out shortcomings, which one election might (only might) cure, we still have a lot going for us!

Re: Emotive subject...

Anyone who thinks we are not under threat from arab extreamists is living in a fools paradise - There are certainly attacks by suicide bombers being planned at this moment - if ID cards, telephone tapping evidence and closed courts can stop just one Sept11 in London, Manchester or Birmingham then be grateful - The IRA who were pretty underfunded, from a relativly small community, and not given to to suicide did pretty well - just think what Bin Laden et al can achieve.

What is the problem with having a document that identfies you? Works for the French and I have no problem with carrying one. What are we all hiding? Just think how much easier for the police and security people it is to eliminate suspects. Of course professional criminals and some terrorists will find ways around it but lots and lots will not.

The UK has really got it good with a goverment that actually tries to make life better for ordinary people - Nothing wrong with child care for those who need it.. High employment, free medical care, pretty good scools and lots of universities, high security and a solution to the northern Ireland problem (almost) excellent education opportunities.

Maybe I do have rose coloured specticals but of course the French and Germans have lots and lots of problems - In fact I think more than the UK - It is the wealthy country of Europe - It is the country doing best in Europe.

Think of the alternatives we are offered! An out of date, unimaginative opposition, that drove the country to the highest unemployment level of all time and introduced the Poll tax!!!!! - the liberals are not too bad - have some good policies but not a lot of experience. It is said in boating 'If it aint broke don't fix it'.
