Am I too inexperienced to take my boat round mull of kintyre ?

The weekend, well Sunday and Monday actually, looks good, tide goes east ~06.00. Leaving Port Ellen/Ardminish Bay around 04.00 should have dawn rising over the hills of Kintyre and it shouldn't rain much.
However, dinnae blame me if that is mince!

Very little wind Sunday-Monday-TuesAM.

South easterly, so go from Gigha and hugging the Kintyre shore and motoring might be productive.:encouragement:
How long will it take for the swell from the current 2windy wind to go down?

Is that a Campbeltown term?

"Haud oan a minute. Ah'm just aff tae the boags tae droap a clanger. Dae ye want a pogle after yuv had yer chips?"
I once bled some red diesel (from my fuel system) into an empty coke (coca-cola) bottle in Campbeltown. I wondered if I left a half bottle of red sitting at the top of the ramp a local might pick it up and drink it - but I poured it into my tank instead.:p

Not sure what to do - the forecast does look quite good at the moment from Saturday- Tuesday.
We could always head to gigha first and if we have to come back that is fine as it would be a nice trip just doing that.
The other issue is we've never been into a marina before- only ever picked up a mooring. We did mean to go to ardfern this summer with someone to practice and I'm cursing myself for not getting around to it - it would be another 1st for us just berthing the boat.
Thanks

If you can manage the Crinean canal and pick up moorings I would think going into a marina would be the least of your worries. Id concentrate on the actual trip and whether or not you feel confident at sea rather than get bogged down with other stuff.

Marina is optional. Once round MoK the whole Clyde is your oyster. Whiting Bay, Lamlash Bay, Blackwater Bay, Machrie Bay, Lochranza, Brodick Bay (all on Arran); Saddell Bay, Torisdale Bay, Caradale Bay, Skipness Bay (all on the east Kintyre shore); or keep going to Millport - best with no south in the wind - all are anchorages and some may still have visitor's buoys.

Oh, and ignore the derogatory comments about Campbeltown. The folk that turn their nose up at it usually like soulless places like Largs marina and wouldn't use sandypoint either.

Nah, Sanda Roads anchorage, actually. You've got me on Sandypoint, though. Never heard of it.

Hi
If you are in any doubt and don’t find a weather window...don’t do it. This is a serious stretch of water. Likely amongst the worst or the worst of inshore (ish) waters in the whole of the U.K. its notorious for it.
The folks got caught out here a few years ago (despite weather forecast). This was in a 40ft princess as well. The boat was no doubt more capable than the conditions...but didn’t stop them having a serious time of it. For the waves to come over the bow and more (full bore, not splashing) on a boat like this, is a serious thing. Serious volume of water also right over the flybridge helm on occasion too.
Glad you are sensible enough to have it in mind though.

Campbeltown is a very poor area - most of it is in the 2nd (red) or 3rd (orange) SIMD (Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation) deciles, and that inevitably means that there are limits to its attractions.

That said, the pontoons are good, the facilities are excellent, the harbourmaster is friendly and helpful and there is a good big Co-Op for taking on supplies. As long as you don't expect expensive coffee shops and other trappings of wealth and luxury, it's absolutely fine.

The oddest thing about Campbeltown is that it was set up as a new town with families imported from Ayrshire to work the Machrihanish coal mines, as even nowadays the look of the place and accent of the inhabitants are Ayrshire rather than Kintyre

I like to eat and drink ashore when I go cruising, the food, drink selection. ambience, value and hospitality we experienced in the Ardshiel this year and every time we have visited over the last 40 plus years matches anything we have found on the west coast. For harbourside entertainment you have the big trucks trying to get the windturbine towers past the cars abandoned outside the cinema. The recently restored cinema is another high standard operation, and up the town the selection of malts on sale and the expertise on the subject which is not restricted to just the three surviving excellent local distilleries is worth experiencing, so what is missing?
The cinema foyer does good coffee all day too.

Aye, it's poor, it's not shite though. Has some good pubs, decent facilities, decent places to eat, handy supermarket for shopping. Sure it's not as twee looking as Salcombe and similar places, but it's still a fine port to arrive in.
And would be absolutely ravishing if arriving after a kicking coming round the mull.

It has improved, but to be honest quite difficult to go backwards. 20 years ago, it was a struggle to find a decent green vegetable in the supermarket, let alone garlic. 2 years ago, I went to the “Indian” (actually Bangladeshi). They could not even supply some chillies for my incredibly bland curry; I have worked in Bangladesh and India and know the food. To be fair, they have to react to the local market, but you would think they had some secret chilli sauce somewhere on the premises.

I went to Salcombe this summer; it is not another world... it is another universe whether or not it is to your taste.

And arrive at the The Mull when the tide is in full flow? I think there may also be counter eddy just north of the lighthouse that turns about an hour before slack water. If I was leaving Gigha or Islay I'd be going well before 4am. If memory serves me right it's 24 miles from either to the Mull.
