Pretty impressive mpg for a 93mph average. A huge shame Porsche dont have diesel engines in their model line up any more. Their petrol hybrid wont get anywhere near that mpg on a similar kind of run

Btw how many speeding tickets would you normally collect between UK and SoF averaging 93mph on the autoroutes? ;)
I picked a few up until I bought a coyote but that became illegal and I wasn’t able to subscribe from the U.K., I now use Waze.

Although never seen any police about early doors, I’d set off 3/4am and set a high average until 8am then drop back to 150kmh

I can tell you how many tickets "MrsA" got on our last blast through Spain in January doing that. Three. That was on the Santander toward San Carles (Valencia) route. The Spanish Police now have tiny little portable cameras you can't spot.
We discovered a BMW 2.0L diesel does @50mpg at 120 Km/h on the return journey. But you really didn't want to know that.

I've now done UK-SoF a few times and I now find the trip stultifyingly boring because I am constantly watching the speedo and looking out for the scameras. Its a shame Germany and France couldnt swap places geographically. At least we'd have the odd stretch of road where we could boot it to relieve the boredom :)

Mike, I average one a return trip. Occupational hazard. The fine isn’t too bad and no points so not too much hassle.

Is that a German fine or a French one? And whats the average fine?

Worst car was a Range Rover SVR, as soon as you got to 90mph, the consumption would drop to 12mpg and got worse the faster you went, that car didn’t last long, got fed up stopping at petrol stations, although full fat RR 4.4 diesel was one of the best and did low 30’s at 100mph.85637AC6-458C-43F5-869D-9940526D3C31.jpeg

Glad to hear you say that because a FFRR SDV8 is probably going to be my next daily driver. I've had 2 RRSs, the current one with the SDV8 engine but the RRS is a bit small inside for carrying all the stuff we usually take to the boat

On these long runs what car do you think has been the best overall when considering comfort, speed and economy?
We do the Spain run a few times a year, which for us is about 1000 miles plus a ferry ride. So far I think of the cars we have had, a 2016 model diesel 5 series BMW was the best.

Of all the cars I've owned, the best long distance cruiser I've had was a 730d. Not only was it very frugal but extremely comfortable and capable of cruising at high speed as well

Once your house in Antibes is full of your boat stuff you won’t need such a big car

Once he'll have a house and a boat in Antibes, why would he need anything else than a scooter for enjoying SoF coastal roads?
PS: On second thought, I wouldn't mind also a Dallara Stradale, for that purpose! (y)

Important thing is to share the driving on theses type of trips .So run the prospect by the Mrs .
We use the cruise control a lot and tend to stick to the speed limits .82 is fast enough imho .
Never picked up a ticket Tbo ....but noticed last 10 y or so the Fr cops do speed gun on the autoroutes .
Swiss are severe hidden cameras and if a foreign plate they store the info and many years later they check up at road blocks etc .
Quite a severe ramp ...fine £800 ish , after a couple of these a week end prison stint ...they let you out week days for work and it’s a full fat prison with hardened criminals so don’t bend down in the shower boys .They confiscate your car too .
So as soon as you hit the speed limit in CH ...it’s like a brick wall everybody’s going the same speed ....no one dares to exceed !
Italy ...not sure how it works but seem to have “radar control “ on the Autostrada....but as said we just comply anyhow .
After a while repeating trips you do learn where the straights are ....Just S of Turin towards Savona ...nice arrow straight roads you can let rip 100 + because you can see literally for miles and theres no intersections.
I maxed a Testarossa 187 mph there ...once .Bit naughty OK .

Few basics improve the experience.....you have got to like being in that space as you are spending a lot of time in it .
Bit like wearing clothes .....feel comfortable in it .
Silence is nice so guess that depends on the general engineering , sound proofing and A pillar + mirror buffeting .
Bentley has double glazing which does work from a sound proofing pov .Electronic damped engine mounts etc .Air suspension insulates too .
Decent sound system .....got an I pod thingy 600 i tunes etc .
All the mirrors auto dim not just the windscreen .
Comfy seats ...this is subjective each to there own ....massage is nice I have found .
Decent boot .
Learnt to avoid black or dark coloured cars especially dark interiors Go for a lighter colours .Cools down quicker after parked up

We get as Chris indicates ^^ 22 mpg when I drive and 23 mpg with the wife out of the W12 ......
How I live with that is easy in the old days we used to trash cars with miles and it’s depreciation what gets you £££ wise not the fuel bill .Sit down and tot it up .
eg RR ,s we would easily rack up 150 K miles in 4 years , once I racked up 165 K in a Cayenne....so dismal residuals .
Dog means flyings out basically.

Tolls
We have a Fr till zapper thing for TT30 ...no queue s .
Last year I spent over a grand on Fr tolls .
Fr is expensive compared to IT .
eg CH to Cannes via Lyon , Marseille to the A8 is longer by 100 miles and about €160 rtn .
Over the st Bernard Pass via Turin Savona , its €80 rtn on empty autostrada.
We always stop in CH it’s 825 miles door to door from Yorkshire.
Trip to Loano is about €30 each way .

Calais / Cannes iirc is 1100 miles and suspect theses days you wont get much change out of €140 each way ?
Back in the 90 s I did that in 9 hrs in a 911 ,...when you could before speed cameras etc .
