PS just a quick update on the anchor - it turns out that my prev info was duff, and in fact there is already a 16kg Delta on the boat. Good enough for me.
FFS. You mean all that time I've wasted arguing with jfm over chains and anchors has been for nowt:) Whats next? That you realise you've got a Targa 52 instead of a Targa 40 when its lifted on to the truck:)

Hey Jimmy that sounds fab, I wish you all the best. Make sure you post lots of pics. :)

Unfortunately we are preparing to sell. Currently our business eats up all of our time (and money!) only used 2 or 3 of our free nights last year.

Hoping to get back on the water with something bigger in about 18 months or so.

All the best

D.

The Delta anchor seems to work well in the Med because its sharp enough to cut through the weed that you find in many anchorages, unlike a Bruce which I've found tends to drag over the top of the weed (although the Bruce is excellent once it does get a bite).

Absolutely concur with that, the 20kg Bruce on my Abs used to set poorly frequently if there was weed. I've been sat in a restaurant when someone's come in saying "señor, your boat's drifting" and looked out to see my boat making its way slowly but merrily backwards through a crowded anchorage towards the rocks. Managed to belt it out there with the tender and caught her just in time, she was just a couple of meters from rock by then. Same thing a few times in other anchorages, sitting on the beach looking out I see my boat slowly coming closer and closer to the beach and think to myself "that f&@$*%#! Bruce!".

My new boat has a Delta. I might even swap that for a Rocna.

Never worked out why but Italian boat manufacturers all seem to fit Bruce anchors as standard which is a bit strange when they don't work very well in their own backyard!

You might want to do a search on Rocna on the Scuttlebutt forum before you do that!

As far as I can tell, down in SoF the big difference is that there are a ton of places to visit right on your doorstep. We've been taken to the Iles des Lerins off Cannes on a handful of occasions by other forumites - a lovely spot. Our new berth is 4nm away. Antibes is about 9nm away (I think), and Villefranche (another pretty location) about 20nm away. So in terms of mileages I think for the first season at least it will all be local - simply because there is such a lot to look at, and it's all right there.

The season after that you could try a run across to the Balearics :)

Lots of people have been busy on the boat over the past few days. Seacraft Marine have been busy installing the aircon; they've done an extremely nice job. Can't test it properly yet until the boat goes back in the water, but a short test run seemed ok.

It's been blimmin cold at Swanwick though, and when I got to the boat this afternoon I found that the Eber wouldn't start - I think the diesel has gone waxy in the very low temps. So it was a bit brrr on board today, although the air temp had risen to 6.5C.

The Lumishore surface mount underwater lights have been fitted, but not yet wired up - the priority has been to get all the below-water work done first. I probably won't complete the wiring up of these until week after next. And RK Marine have been busy on the leg and engine service; this is still in progress. One very annoying fault that became apparent as soon as the boat was lifted is that my steering rams have failed yet again. Grrr.

And picking up on the major debate from earlier in this thread, I got all the anchor chain out this afternoon, and slightly oddly I appear to have exactly 41m measured from the bow roller to the swivel. Either way - not enough, so this week I will be off hunting for a replacement length.

Had a nose at your lights yesterday, they looked just the ticket! Be great to see some photos of their performance when you get to the Med?
Did you notice the T44 next to you.........very ironic!

Sounds great, I'm sure you won't look back. We upgraded to a V42 last year and have also thought of making the move down to the Med at some point. As you say last summer was very disappointing but we got some half-decent trips done (Guernsey and Dartmouth) but ran out of weather really. We've decided to give it another season as there are some more places we want to get to like Cornwall and the Scillies - I mean by the law of averages we should be due a decent summer soon..shouldn't we??

Out of interest how did you decide on SoF though? Did you look at the Balearics? Can I be rude and ask how much the road transportation is?

Good luck with the move

Yep, for sure - sods law will ensure that the fab summer will be this one, because I won't have a boat here any more! :D

SoF: a few reasons:
1. relatively easy to get to, lots of flights, you can even drive if you're pushed
2. I sometimes need to be there for work
3. and because of 2. we've met a bunch of forumites who are already established down there, you might call them the mole sud posse (jfm is the sheriff...) and they are all very nice people

Because of this I didn't consider the Balearics, no. I did briefly think about Sant Carles - thanks to Hurricane we've been there a couple of times, and it is obviously good vfm and has UK-style pontoon berthing - but it's hard to get to for weekends, you need to be there for longer stays ... and the Targa 40 is too small for longer stays.

Can I be rude and ask how much the road transportation is?

Not rude at all. Quotes came in at about £6k; a bit less if you can find a return load. Best chance for this is if you can be flexible on dates. I want to take the boat down in the second half of March; transport company has suggested second week of March which is a wee bit tough on my schedule, but doable. On Friday they got in touch and asked if they could have the boat on 24 Feb. That was too tight for me - we've still got a very long list of jobs to do before the boat will be ready. So if you can be ready, but then sit tight for a few weeks, that's your best chance of catching a return load.

Cheers
Jimmy
