I'm accompanying my brother on the maiden voyage of his new boat which is a Maxim 17ft cuddy with a 100 hp Yamaha 4 stroke.

It's his first seagoing boat having had a Thames cruiser previously.

I actually bought it on his behalf as he was in Aus at the time.

It's a bit tired but my view is that it has good "bones".

The engine was what Mercury used in its first 4 strokes, Yamaha powerhead with Mercury leg etc.

I've had 2 of this style outboard - 75hp versions.

It's a carb engine but there is a receipt for ultrasonic cleaning a couple of years ago.

There is also a water/fuel seperator which I drained today. No water!

So I heard the engine run on muffs, into gear etc.

Leg oil is not milky, ditto engine oil.

The purpose of this trail is to see how the boat goes.

If all ok then he'll spend the winter servicing the engine and applying Silic One to the hull

It will be kept on the Hamble 365 days so it's a perfect match.

I'll try to attach a video of all goes well ...

Brownie points if you can guess what I paid within £500!!

It has not escaped the notice of us folks rather long in the tooth regards motor boating, that those entering the hobby now are definately more inclined to consider newer more compact modern craft, with a good turn of speed and highly likely to be powered by an outboard.
They want turn key day or weekend boats with kit plumbed in ready to go and are no longer prepared to spend more on a boat than a family car.
A few decades ago buying a boat big enough to be able to spend your summer holiday on would be a important part of the plan.
This generation would regard spending some damp "summer" fortnight on the boat with absolute horror, preferring the delights of actual Sun via Gatwick or Stanstead.
Boating has changed and vast numbers of those once sought after and desirable "Big n Heavy" boats are lying unused just under the brokers radar.
The current bunch of buyers are buying what they need in boat...................as for any of them any even thinking about buying a fixer up.
:ROFLMAO:
Small sailing boats.
Chum has a small ready to go sailing boat up for sale , asking price well under £5K.
Local broker has got so many cheap small yachts on his list, they have stopped selling these on a percentage basis and have introduced a minimum fee in order to make it worth while advertising them.

I would pay£7650 if seen running

Much closer!!!

I did see it running.

There are loads of tired bowriders with 3 litre mercruiser and stern drives out there.

A maintenance burden and generally unsuitable for the Solent chop.

A few 2 stroke powered cuddies come to market but fuel costs are significantly higher.

So.... a 4 stroke outboard cuddy is the sweet spot.

100 hp on a 17ft hull will give about 30 knots which is more than enough for my brother used to 7km/h on the Thames ....

What year is the boat please as the rear reminded me of late 80s styling from Maxum

1997 I understand. Not sure of engine date but probably the same.

They are very reliable engines which is why Mercury/mariner bought the powerheads

As long as you keep water out of the carbs they go on forever.

Ask me how I know all about ultrasonic cleaning ...
