MBM,
Well done for a well researched and presented article, this is the sort of thing we need in the magazine.

I subscribe to MB&Y and just picked up MBM at the airport. I thought most of the mag was excellent and more focused on my interest in the more practical side. Oldgit if you read this there was a nice article on the Medway which you may find interesting.

They tested 10 additives and 2 manetic in-line devices.
Best value was Biobor JF and recommended were Fuelclear M68 and Grotamar 71.
Alongside each product are photos to show the effect, these really show how they worked ( or not ).

I see that Depsol is deafeningly silent on this matter as the MBM report damned his Soltron with faint praise but I expect he'll have a good reason for that

Re: Depsol, Solly = Snake oil?

Nah, but on the Simpsons last night they were milking rats and selling it to the local skool, maybe that's what's been going on here with solly/forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Re: Depsol, Solly = Snake oil?

Axshully seemed like a pretty comprehensive test, much to my surprise. 12 different products tested, showed pictures of how effective the bugged diesel cleared for 3 seperate treatments, very graphic. Most eddective products are Grotamar 71 and Fuelclear M68, neither of which I've ever seen. Both came in at about 10 - 15% more expensive than solly.

The test does admit that cos solly is an enzyme and not a biocide, they were not sure whether the test worked properly.

Mmmm. Starbrite biocide seemd to work, but so did Solly. We felt subjectively a bit more oomph from the Solly treated stuff, but very unscientific. Solly available in Christchurch, others not. Available snake oil better than unavailable effective biocide.

Re: Depsol, Solly = Snake oil?

But what were they testing for. All I know is. I put some Soltron in, in Guernsey. Got back and my mechanic said. Wheres the smoke gone!! He was so impressed he wants some. The local berth holders have promised to supply me free. Well I think thats wot they meant when they said. "Do something or else we will!" /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

I am certainly not silent I logged in today but didnt post until now as I was waiting for people to actually read the mag first.

Do you not think I knew these results a few weeks back? Cmon guys give me some credit. So for all of you who want to know what happened here goes but I must stress that you read what they said about Soltron first.

1 Soltron is an enzyme present in the kerosene base that it is suspended in at a ratio of about 1 ppm (parts per million) to keep it alive. Had we known that the tests were going to be done on enuf fuel to use as a mouthwash we would have said something sooner as you need more than a teardrop of Soltron to effect so much bug in such a small quantity of fuel. Multiply the fuel and soltron by ten and the results would have been very different.

2 We recommend that MBM use ECHA to get the proper results from the Biocide tests but were not told of the exact testing amounts until later....when it was too late. Remeber all my testing has been done from a large tank not from small vials.

3 Because of 2 Soltron paid for ECHA to do a filtration test on the treated contaminated fuel, an extract from an email from ECHA follows on the results...

'We have completed the MIL-S-53021 Filterability test which shows essentially that contaminated fuel, dosed with Soltron at 400 ppm v/v passes about 1.4 times quicker through a 0.8 micron filter than untreated contaminated fuel.
The fuels tested were the same as those used in the Motor Boat Monthly Trial.'

4 MBM did not approve a large enuf budget for all the fuel additives to have a filter test so Soltron paid for theres.

5 As you can see from 3 even on a slight amount the contamination gets broken up under filtration pressure and removed from the system.

6 I think enuf people on this forum who have had the bug used Soltron and cleared it should be enuf evidence that it works. All the people that sent me PMs thanking me for the advice and that Soltron cleared the bug and is the dogs b*****x...nows your time to speak in defence of the product please, dont be shy.

7 I feel that MBM could have emphasised a bit more clearly the information I gave you in 3 however I do know that they are going to continue testing on different boats however if there any bad bug cases you guys come across I would like to sponsor one just to re-emphasise that Soltron does clear the fuel. Even though I do have enuf results to prove it I just would like to prove it publically again on this forum. Just to keep the doubters happy

8 Remeber Soltron is an enzyme and works different to all the biocides and chemicals.

I am open to any further questions but please read what MBM say first before shooting it down in flames.....quote 'it is doubtful whether the small quantities involved in our test allowed it to work properly'

One final thing..it is good to see MBM doing full in depth tests like this at large expense as I know ECHA is not cheap. Congratulations on a good article.

I am boating again ;-)

Re: depsol, is it worth me buying mag

What you mean you don't buy it anyway?

Come on, fair do's and all that, There's good old IPC giving us this wunnerfuel (pun eh geddit??) forum, all for free and you don't even buy their mags? So how do you expect 'em to pay for the costs of this site eh? Must cost 'em a bundle what with Kim's £100K salary, index linked pension, BUPA, company car and first class travel, fiddles on his ex's, plus all the other hangers on, so I reckon it's gotta cost 'em what 3/4 mill a year to run this site? And you're too tight to just buy their rag eh?

Bit like going into Tesco's and eating their food off the shelves then going home without buying anything.

No, it's only fair, you've got to take out a subscription and get it regular.

(Is that alright Kim? Do I get my free subscription now?)

Easy. No one buys food round here. Easyest way is to take knife and fork and a tin opener. Course you can get them from Tesco as well. (leave them in a corner for next time) Anyway First visit garden furniture section and select table and chairs. Place at end of isle. Whilst some one is going round selecting food. You stand behind table offering bits of cheese or whatever, to passers by. You must have seen them. This makes you look official. Course if you can get hold of a barbique, you can give Barbique demonstrations to vary your diete. Just add lib around this for a decent menu.
