I keep my boat on the East coast during summer months, in winter I go inland up the Humber onto the none tidal Ouse. Because of a lock stoppage which should have been from Nov - Dec, I cannot reach the tidal Ouse, the stoppage has now been extended to May or possibly longer. This leaves me with my boat stuck on a river, but more to the point me having to pay 2 mooring fees, plus a licence for been on the river in which I can't escape. The question is should the Water Authority be offering an alternative e.g. (road transport), after all they seem very eager to take my money for services they are not able to provide, or is it a case of 'Tough luck'!

I would be very interested to hear anybody's views.

I would in my case .... take all paperwork including the alternative mootring data and present it to the River Authority's and make very plain that you are there purely as a result of involuntary actions. It was not your decision to stay and it is now up to them to find a solution - at least waive the fees .....

I would be extremely vocal about it ... even take Citizens Advice ... or even better approach Trading Standards / local Radio / TV ..... I believe that the person has a right to present his case and be heard. I would not accept it and would make all effort to avoid paying ..... legally of course ... but I would make sure that full record of my complaint letter is kept ... the letter should be recorded delivery so that you cannot be accused of failure on your part.

Sounds to me like they have effectivly impounded your boat against your will, the question is do they have some hidden small print? they normally do :(

Did they give you nottice before they extended the period in which you are now facing?

The only way I've found this info was by phoning them, they publish a stoppage sheet hard copy as well as internet, having said according to the sheets everything re-opened in December. MBM's latest info was 14th Feb, but obviously that date has been and gone as well.

I can honestly say British-waterways are only competent at one thing, and that's taking my hard earned cash!
