Was\working in a hospital for kids today. Now all these kiddies are in this place for quiet a period of time and the only time they get out is if the staff take them. Now the problem is they aint got a big enough mini bus to take more than six wheelchairs.

So the crux of the matter is money, so put forward ideas for raising a few quid for them. I thought of a sort of sponsered relay around the coast, passing a teddy from boat to boat or something, there must be enuf of us here to do a few miles each, while we're out cruising, and you get to meet forum users as well. Time limit could be say the summer period or till the end of the year.

Well come on them get the grey matter working!!

Nice one Barry I was wondering when this might come up, Mike Finch did something like this crossing the channel some years back, went over bought good wine brought back and auctioned it off for a charity, if I still have the boat then I would be glad to do a leg of it praps sharing with other forum members who do not have a boat at that time, lets hear some more on this subject from others, I feel this may be a long thread!, more replies later i,m sure, what do you think Kim?

Isn't Kim doing his round the UK tour thing this summer? Could be a good fund raiser. Master Ted could spawn loads of Little Teds that accompanying boats take back on their return trips and then raise money from their local clubs etc.

No, I'm not rounding Britain this year but the MBM team have that plan in place. Jake will probably read this at some point but I'll mail it to him as well.

A few years back we organised a round Britain relay for a crystal wand in aid of children with leukaemia. Got into a bit of strife trying to find a motorboat to take it from the eastern end of the Caledonian down the east coast until the navy stepped in with a warship!

So it's possible but will takes lots of organising, whether you go all the way around, along one coast or cross Channel.

If this starts to gain momentum am happy to set up a special forum here, either to public view or, for the purposes of organisers, a back door one. Will keep a weather eye on posts over next couple of days and can probably help with quite a bit of logistical info, both from the leukaemia trip and from the experience of the 1999 Round Britain.

What about some sort of sponsored "Posting". Advertise it well and choose a specific day, where the number of threads will generate an amount of money, could be humour related with a challenge or similar. As an example you start of with an idea and see how far you can get it to go "Mornington Crescent" style. Kim could be adjudicator. 10p a thread would generate a donation of £10 for each 100 threads. Just an idea of the top of shiny head!, any comments?

I am not sure if this will help you guys but we yachties here in Mallorca have a charity for children called Yates Naviganse. We take children out sailing. It is supported by donations etc. However most of the money is raised through a golf tournement and ball organised by Pinmar Int.. International Paints is also a sponsor as are some of the local banks. Every participant of the golf do or ball pays to take part. It is a very big affair here with big prices but maybe you could do something similar on a smaller scale. Also why not approach your local marine suppliers see if they will sponsor some products and maybe do an auction.

Well I fear the Solent will be busy with offers to help but count us as one of them - just make sure I don't have to go though any locks.

As a suggestion: Instead of a skip lunch thing - how about we all donate a mile or two from our fuel tanks - of course the diesel boys (and girls) will cough up a quid whilst us petrol heads will get stung for a £4.50...

Or get the marinas to donate vistor berth fees for one day over a weekend, could also ask the forum members to donate a days berth fee as well.

Happy to help.

Fraid it may be slow but will sail as fast as possible.

Not quite true, Paul. It was MBM who organised a cross channel Beaujolais run about 10yrs ago and I happened to take part. Unfortunately it was November and the weather wasnt kind. I dont think the event has taken place since

Barry, count me in for anything but just a few ideas
1) Boating quiz night (maybe in Solent or London area).
2) Forum members contribute unwanted boaty stuff and take a stand at boat jumble
3) Dinner/dance or golf tournament with raffle having sponsored prizes
