Fenders both side\'s please!!!!

having just paid the boat a visit, was greeted by fellow berth holder who told me to check the boat for damage...it appears yesterday the yacht next to me whilst attemting to come into his berth in a F7 wind blowing him off got it VERY WRONG and hit me!!! I discover a nice 2ft scrape along the side, more annoying as I have spent most of the winter applying 4 coats of polish and wax to my beloved topside's....All it would have taken for this plonker to have placed fender's either side of his boat...why do people insist on only fendering the side they hope to come alongside...at the end of the day at times we all get it wrong but a little bit of thought will minimise any damage done. Having spent most of my days messing around in boats I do not suffer fools gladly..no doubt this skipper will proudly show me his newly won RYA certificate to show me he know's better...!!! I think not...On a final note please when you do get it wrong and do damage please report it!!! I guess this skipper had hoped to get away with it....thankfully there are people out there that care...

Best lesson - give him the bill

Get the topsides assessed for repairs .....don't repair ...... just present him with the estimated bill. See what happens....

That is the best lesson to teach someone ......

Will that make him a better seaman???... I think not, lets hope the next time he has the respect to fender against other people's property. No matter how much care you take with your own vessel there will be some plonker that does'nt give a f..k!!!

Sorry but ....

a lot of boaters today are not the seaman of yesterday .... cheque book sailing has become a reality ........ so HIT him where it hurts ....

Marinas are NOT the social friendship places like Yacht Clubs of old ..... many berth-holders do not know the next guy ..... You could sit at table in the Marina Bar and not know the people on next table are from the yacht next to yours .....

disagree - I think it will make him a better seaman because he will start to consider others rather than just the immediate needs of his craft and crew.

Re: Sorry but ....

I beg to differ but our marina is a friendly one....most people talk to everyone so that makes it worse that he never said anything...guess it's like bumping a car in a carpark and driving off in the hope no one has noticed.....anyway sure has ruined my day!!!!!!!

Next F7 and problem berthing - he does it again ....... sorry but I believe in diplomatic .... "OI Matey - look what you did .... lets discuss how you'll sort it ........"

Have left a note on his boat to point out the error of his ways....at times it can go pear shaped for all of us...lets only hope his embarrasment will help him learn.

Re: Shame him in the marina then ...

Personnally I cant understand the stupidity of this. as far as I am concerned if the wind is blowing me off the pontoon, and there is another boat on the other side of the finger, I would actually plan to go alongside the other boat and then transfer lines across to my berth - If only I could, but my berth is on the end of the pontoon, so when wind is blowing off, I have a dickens of a job getting into my berth.

Re: Fenders both side\'s please!!!!

May I suggest that you always have fenders on both sides as prevention is better than cure.

Re: Fenders both side\'s please!!!!

I always rig fenders both sides. At the appropriate height on the intended mooring side ie. low for pontoon or high up for rafting. The opposite side of the boat side is rigged with high fenders to protect other boats (and mine) from a cockup.

Ding Ding - seconds out, I'm in Nigel's corner on this one.
All too often it's not the owner who does the damage but some irresponsible charterer or borrower of the boat, neither of which care too much. Take the strong line.

I agree with Nigel on this one.

The biggest crime commited was not owning up .An apologetic phone call or note would have left everyone feeling more positive.

Send him a bill not for his lack of seamanship but for his lack of common courtesy.

Not owning up

The worst part of this is the fact that he has not owned up. I had a situation on Chichester Marina when someone bent my Davits, and left evidence of their visit with a piece of the Starboard Nav light. 40 boats later - I had the culprit - the bit fitted the remains precisley. The Marina chased the cuplrit - and on being threathened with his removal from the marian - paid up. Davits repaired professionaly - but that another story along the lines of Jimi's rudder!

Re: Fenders both side\'s please!!!!

Is this a bit pf Pot calling the Kettle black if as you say you have just launched and not got round to putting your fenders out, you must have gone in to your berth without fenders rigged both sides!!!

Re: Fenders both side\'s please!!!!

Naa - terrible point - either the berth next to him was empty - so why rig that side, or the wind was blowing him onto his pontoon, so same issue.

But I agree with Nigel - by not getting him to own up and pay up, it leaves one more careless owner who hasn't learnt yet and will do it again to someone else. (or maybe even to you - if it's clear you didn't mind the first scratch too much, hey, who cares about another one...../forums/images/icons/smile.gif)
