Re: Next time & Regard for other mariners property

Becky....many thanks at last a true seaman....I was begining to feel guilty that some twits senslessness had actually hurt my pride and joy....as for the comments TCM has made I notice from his profile that having made nearly 8000 posts in a couple of years he cannot spend much time practicing what he preaches as he must be glued to a damn keyboard!!! Its good to know that many fenders are filled with hot air though.

Own Up!!!

Starboard,

Forget the fenders & all the comments for & against.

The real point is, that the other guy can not be much of anything, either seamen or gentleman! He is obviously someone to feel sorry for as his cojons must be very small in not confronting you & owning up. For that he should not be forgiven!

One day as the world revolves he will get his!

poter.

Re: Why is everyone so anal about this??

Andrew, you have been looking at my hull haven't you ;-)

If someone dinged me I would be hard pressed to find their mark amoungst the last 27yrs worth of knocks and bumps. If I was a rich man I would love to get her sprayed and polished, but alas I will have to have a boat a few steps away from a work boat.

I work on the basis that I enjoy my boat and boating, if it gets a few dents and dings and other imperfections along the way, it's because I use it, and don't worry about it needing the odd repair. Makes for a much happier boating lifestyle.

Re: Shame him in the marina then ...

wow, so how do they cope when on a visitors mooring or at anchor to get the little baby into the dinghy.......oooohhhhhhhh! they must only go to marinas, how dull life must be for people who only marina hop, they are not the nicest of places, unless visiting NCP carparks is your lubber hobby /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

I was a little taken aback by you saying you are not expecting to be used as a temporary quay, I thought it was quite sensible advice to fender both sides and in the event of bad wind come against the nieghbour to then pull yourself over in greater control. I am luckier than most with twin engines, but do realise the limitations of some monohulls in close quarters to the point if I was on a visitors berth I would actively encourage this practice.

It has to be better than watching in dread as they skate in trying their utmost to keep away from your vessel with a likely scenario of an unplanned coming together, which has to worse dunnit?

Re: Shame him in the marina then ...

Well, I've managed not to use a neighbouring boat as a quay for as long as I can remember (by usaully using a back-spring as the first attachment), so I don't see why others should expect to use me as one. Problem is that it seems a majority of people don't seem to have worked out that a bow line is not usually the first or only rope to be handled on the finger/pontoon. Judging by the antics of the majority of charter boats, the sailing schools don't seem to have thought about it either. However, I accept that in very narrow berths the fenders may get friendly with each other.

I have to admit (don't tell her) that I have an agile wife who has been practicing my requirements of her when berthing for 23 odd years. I wonder how much I could hire her out for?!

Re: Next time & Regard for other mariners property

You mention words like it being "yesterday" and leaving a note for your neighbour about the error of his ways, inferring the accident has only just happened and you ain't seen the guy yet. Cripes, you guys over there must automatically hate the guts of your next doors.

The MoBo that was next to me hit me one day and gave me a couple of feet of grief, didn't leave a note. He didn't have to as it was obvious it was he and about 3 or 4 weeks later when we both happened to end up on our boats at the same time he hopped across and didn't confess - was nothing to confess - to ask how we could sort it out. Was a good introduction in fact, got us on friendly terms and always good for a chat now.

Have you given the guy a chance?

update for John

oh dear you aren't up to with this sort of thread at all, and you very clearly do not live in the UK.

See, Starboard's boat has been very slightly scratched (we're talking about a few quids worth of gelcoat repair) but that doesn't matter - THIS is starboard's opportunity to go utterly raving mad - the perpetrator was obviously a total idiot - there's no two ways about it!

Furthermore - everyone who doesn't also agree that the perpetrator was an idiot is ALSO an idiot, a fool, a know-nothing and a moron. Which now includes you, as well as me. I thnk zefender is also tarred with the same brush.

It doesn't matter that you continually agree with *part* of stbd's viewpoint (such as the fact that the perpetrator should pay, as i did and so do you) - what's needed here is fulsome backing for starboard's unilateral bloodspitting fury as he vents his anger on an unseen total and utter git.

Actually, demurring is all part of thrill for the likes of stbd - because he can tell and retell the tale together with lurid stories of how "lot's of others seemed to think it was okay - can you belive it??!" in ascending and screeching Meldrew-esque tones in the bar.

So, he certainly won't be mentioning that he had no fenders (but should have puttem out before the boat was lifted) and also *definitely* won't be contemplating the idea of being remotely pleasant to the guy who pranged his boat, ever.

Now, there are SOME EXCEPTIONS to the above, and that is the issue of class. So, for example, if it transpires that the perpetrator (or you, or me) are well-known politicians of the correct flavour, or an aristocrat, or speaks witha public-school accent he'll be doffing his cap and will readily agree to sort it out and be speaking very highly of the chap after the event. Otherwise, all the above stands.

hope this helps.

Tcm, please wind your neck in and let it go, otherwise, the thread will be pulled, or, people will get upset and someone will get moved off, for nothing more than what started as a disagreement.

This post has no value other than to provoke a reaction from stbd. It is a nice troll that even questions his class ethics.

Please do grow up, you are generally a respected poster on the forum, but this is just low.

Re: Class war

Since TCM is not known for his crazed leftwing dogma, and is a Northerner and thus genetically working class, I suspect his tongue was somewhat in his cheek.

Whether starboard is right (isn't starboard always right?) to assert that anyone pranging into his boat is guilty of gross lack of seamanship is a bit OTT though. Someone might have made a terrible and very rare cock up. Might not even have realised he had pranged into Starboard's vessel. If he did realise, of course he should have been ever-so-umble and offered to pay etc and it is v. rude (and non-PLU) to just bugger off. But why did Starboard usually put his fenders out - for show? Maybe, just maybe it was to protect his boat against accidents and thus damage. It's obviously bad luck for him that it happended just when he was unprotected but, the fact is, if he had his fenders out, he probably wouldn't has sustained damage. I'm not trying to wind him up but it is a bit like car claims being reduced if, even as the innocent party, safety precautions are not taken (eg seat belts).

Re: Class war

To be fair I was not commenting on the thread here, whether stbd should have put fenders out or not, I was making the point that TCM's post had but one purpose and that was or is to wind stbd up.

I have seen groups ruined by over zealous moderation and it is quite clear from our moderators occasional comments that posts intended only to provoke will not be tolerated, I am not one for moderation, but tcm entered this subject on a slightly high horse. Maybe in the bar he would be grinning from ear to ear while saying it, but this is a written media and it is not always easy to tell how a statement was meant.

stbd has had a few digs also at tcm and both of them are wrong. It is easier if someone is trolling for a reaction to just shut the hell up, a little like real life.

Does that make sense, I am not attempting to take sides, I can just see where this is headed and it aint pretty.

Re: Next time & Regard for other mariners property

I'm afraid that you don't seem to have read what i wrote.

I agreed that the guy shouldn't have cleared off, and should pay. So whay are you "amazed at my attitude" ?

My attitude is that in response to "Fenders out both sides please!" - it is actually you that hasn't followed that command. This doesn't change the situation very much - but it does question you squawking quite so loudly.

pix pls and update for jools

Facts:

1. Stbds boat had no fenders.

2. It got whacked. Sure, the guy will have to pay, no question.

BUT

3. Stbd comes on ybw with a post yelling at others to put fenders out - when he had none out himself! Which seems a bit much dunnit?

But then, he swears at me and slags off others too. And now you're tuttutting at me being a "respected poster". Which is most defintely NOT TRUE :)

Anyway, I wonder if after such a very long thread stbd could possibly provide pix of the damage sustained? Who knows - the perpetrator might realise it was him.

Re: update for John

TCM...my final word. Your comments to mainlysteam only confirm to me what a raving loon you must be. You have grabbed this thread by the horns and gone off like a raving bull in a china shop. My intention all along was to point out that if a vessel was manouvering in a close quarters situation he should fender for all possibilities..i.e getting it wrong. Your last post to mainlysteam has nothing to do with the original post. At no time have I ranted or raved about this, upset indeed that it happened, especially something that could have been prevented.as for your comments about class and toffing hat's whee are you coming from with those comments. Being born and bred on the Lancashire coast, I have sailed dinghys, fished the Channel Isles commercially, sailed yachts to 55ft with commercial endorsment for power, and spent 15 years with the RNLI as an offshore life boat Coxswain...and yes in that time I have learnt not to suffer fool's glady. Your comments to me bring me to think you are one of those fools. As for the forum being a relative new member I have enjoyed both giving and recieving much usefull information. I always say no matter how long you have been at it, you will never stop learning...and to that end this forum can only help. However with comments like your's that could be seen even to be racist I think in future I will waste my time else where...you are the type that will ruin it for all..I think topcat's comments are well founded. Good day to you and once again fair wind's to you, lets hope they don blow you in my direction.!!
