Diesel filters..

They are great. Struggling to understand how so cheap though - these are usually £500+ from the usual suspects
 
Worked fine for me and I paid less than £30. I had to get slightly smaller hose fittings to suit my existing hoses. ( 1GM 10 doesn't need a great flow rate)
 
If you search in YouTube someone did a very good comparison of the the real thing and a cheap Chinese copy. Watching that carefully persuaded me to buy the real thing despite the cost.
Bur there again I dislike cheap Chinese rip offs.

I can fit the rancor filter either immediately before or after the fuel lift pump? Does it make a material change which side it goes?
 
It's a great filter design, I have no idea why anyone would use the 296 style filter anymore. The patent ran out on the Racor 500 years ago and the copycats started coming out. Racor are still the best as they have a seperate bracket, but I have two of the cheap ones (primary & secondary) on our boat - a 30 micron element in the first and 2 micron in the second (no on-engine fuel filter).
If using the copycat filter, good practice is to rebuild them using the genuine Racor seal kit. A few people have reported the turbine element has come loose, a bit of blue loctite seems to be the fix.
These (Racor 500) are my favourite filters, the flow rates are high enough that you can use fine elements for smaller engines, they are easy to change if needed without too much mess, and they are a better design and better built than the CAV/296 style filters.

Racor installation instructions say put the filter before the pump - avoids pump-induced bubbles reducing the filtering efficiency & is nicer for the pump itself. This means you can't prime the pump (unless gravity fed), so I put a squeezy bulb before the filter, which works a treat.
 
Arrived today, very nicely finished but I note, not easy to screw direct onto a bulkhead and

there is a red, round piece of loose circular plastic in the bowl? Wonder where that came from, photo to follow, server problem
 
Yes. Change from cav to racor type if you have the space. They are a bit wider, and you need nearly half a meter of vertical space so you can get the filter in from above, fit the longer racor assembly, and a bit more below to use the drain plug.
 
It floats on water, if there is any in the bowl.

One bizarre thing about the filter is that the counterbored holes ( which don't look necessary ) on the rear of the bowl are too small to take an 8mm socket or a box spanner, so one will have to be ground down and kept attached.
Bit of a surprise that there is no vent in the top cap either, maybe you don't need one but I can see an airlock might happen there
