Hi All,

Quick question as i am in work!.

If there a law / requirement that means i MUST have my boat name on the Bow either side, or can i move this to be on the side of the boat up by the cockpit? (where it would be clear seen as well). Reason being i would like to put a passage of words on the Bow where the name would normally be.

Thanks in advance.

The only requirement for Part 1 when I registered mine was that it had to be on the transom. It also said it had to be plate steel welded on, or paint. I queried it and the authority said a PVC adhesive name would be OK.

(as I get opportunity to reply damn customers come into the office!)

As above from Ken and Vyv.... but it does pay in some areas now to have ID of boat clearly shown near bows and on stern/transom with port of reg' or dodgers with name/SSR if appropriate, as customs and excise are more and more seeing it as an opportunity to stop you if you cannot be identified.... Big brother! caused by druggies/immigrant runs and terrorists no doubt.

Are there any name requirements for SSR? We don't have anything on the hull, as the previous owner painted over it and neither he nor we have got round to re-adding the name. We do have it on the dodgers, which I guess satisfies suspicious men in black RIBs, but does SSR require something more permanent or is that for Part 1 only?

(We do have the SSR numbers in the regulation size on the coachroof.)

Name not a requirement for SSR yet advisable especially if going continental, so dodgers sounds good

For SSR (Part III) there is no requirement.
I checked because as a newbie I was told I had to have the name on the transom.
Err... the boat had a canoe stern - so no transom.
Location of the name board is a detail for CG66.

So firstly thanks for all the replies,

Secondly a bit confused now. I have an SSR but how do I know what part it has been registered up too? And I am still unclear about being able to add the name elsewhere other than the bow P&S.

Sorry for being dull

Part 1 requires the letters to be 75mm high or more, but that's liklely what you'd be doing anyway. Coding requires the name also to be on the bows, not just the transom, above a certain LOA threshold (15m I think) but few surveyors enforce that particular rule. If visiting other countries (France comes to mind) make sure you have a name also on the tender, and "t/t" before it, otherwsie if you are unlucky enough to meet a jobsworth official he will tell you it is an indepenedent boat then you're in trouble for not having registered it (I know I know, barmy, but don't shoot the messenger)

If your going abroad you need the p&s bow name and stern name and Port name & SSR.

I lived in Holland for years and never had P&S name. I have not seen any instruction as to P&S name for any registration.

The port name is an interesting one. For Part 1 there is a list of ports from which one must be taken. For SSR (Part 3) you can have whatever you like, e.g. Birmingham.

Hi, we decided to put our boats name on the bow after hearing some strange noises after dark one late November night in Cowes Yacht Haven. When I got out for a look I found a young Marina guy hanging on to our stern and wedging himself between the pile so he could see the name on the transom. This was a very precarious position and he nearly fell in,as the stern was protruding a metre or so from the end of the pontoon. Apparently the manager had asked him to get all the boat names checked off to make sure all fee's were paid. Fortunatly he stayed on the pontoon! I gave him the information he needed and then had a look myself. It was impossible to read it and hard enough to see when moored close to another craft behind. As its only four letters it was not expensive and looks well.
