Agreed...but

I'd just be going around in backward circle to starboard, so getting dizzy would be the worst problem.

But because of the shape of my 'afterbody' (love that expression!) I could put a load of weight on the afterdeck (me, for example) and lift the bows a fair bit.

Try that with your nasty yoghurt pot bathing platform jobbies!

Re: You big-girls-blouses don\'t like holes in boats...??

The Dragonfly trimarans that I have been considering recently seem to take this seriously. In the bow of each hull there is a completely sealed compartment, and the remaining volume of any one hull is sufficient to keep the boat afloat. So to sink you would have to hole all 3 hulls behind this compartment below the waterline. Pretty unlikely I think.

Good Idea

Never thought of using the bathing platform for that! Suppose it would solve Claymore's problem whilst adding weight to the aft end!

Re: The time has come...

Being unselfish, I can't keep all this to myself, so I think we should start with punching holes in yours (you can always convert to self-bailers!).

Hey! Keep me out of this.

I was just trying to be helpful. /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

I'm thoroughly convinced that my boat will sink if you punch a hole in it below the WL.

Re: Not airtight, but watertight.

Great, all you need to add is that they are all watertight, or at worst, can be made so by stuffing a cork or t-shirt into a hole. Does this apply to all the lockers? (Ron Holland was a good designer).

Re: Oh, and let\'s put paid to the myth

Now there's b******s and there's b*******s. Pop down and refresh your knowledge of your own boat!!! If you have a locker bigger than 0.5m3, I'll eat my tiller (gotta keep it nautical). Yes, of course the reserve buoyancy is higher aft than forrard, but don't quote tonnes without knowing what the value of the RB is. That is why I used my water tank as a model. (The comparison was to be between my water tank, which is a pretty big 'lump' in the boat, with the lockers, which are roughly similar and the fact that the boat doesn't sink a foot, as suggested, when I go from empty to full).

You are remarkable for having such an open mind.

Re: I also wouln\'t be too sanguine

Oh come on!! The water pressure exerted by a head of, say, 1 or 2 ft!! That wouldn't power a shower, The big ships bulkheads are holding back not only a big head of water, but fail due to being open to pressure due to forward motion. This is about the difference between statics and dynamics.

Only those in the forecabin. All other lockers are below waterline level. What is more worrying is the cockpit locker. If I get holed aft I would certainly go straight down. Voluminous with hardly a bulkhead in sight - an umbrella would be a waste of time.

Re: I also wouln\'t be too sanguine

So you are talking about a hole in the hull when you are not moving anywhere, ie static? Apart from a falling tide, and being hit by another non-static vessel. Beyond that, I can't think how a collision can occur without movement being involved..

Re: I also wouln\'t be too sanguine

You can, if you work hard at it, deliberately miss the point, and concentrate on places where you feel you can find fault with my postings. That is pretty easy, as in this forum, one cuts corners rather than writes a thesis.

My point about statics and dynamics has to be taken in the context, which you chose quite deliberately to ignore, so you could take easy pops at me. Ok, if that turns you on, sobeit.

If the hole was big enough to be presenting the internal surfaces to the pressure created by the boat moving through the water (ie, a dynamic effect) then all bets are off, the boat will sink. I have, throughout, implied a hole which would make you sink if nothing stopped the inflow, but is not a great gaping hole which could subject internal structure to dynamic effects.

If I have been so stupid as to not make that plain, then please understand me now.

Re: Not airtight, but watertight.

First, I suspect you are stating this away from your boat. Very few boats have the internal spaces tops below w/l, the geometry is all wrong. As to the cockpit locker, does it drain into the bilge? Consider stuffing yet another t-shirt into the drain, that would contain things.

If I have made you start thinking 'what if....' then I have already made my objective.

Re: The time has come...

Well, if you were to make it worth my while by placing a side bet, say £10000, I would be quite happy to take it on. Would you?

Mobile goal posts!

Given this set og circumstances my Ben would'nt sink either as I've a couple of wee wally type things ... so whats the next change going to be? Weather influences? What would the effect of high pressure, high humidity be ... compared to low pressure, low humidity ...

Question Mr Opiniated ... is a F8 in high pressure stronger than a F8 in low pressure?

Re: You are talking.....

Just between you, me and the gatepost, that was the intention (sparks I mean). This board, apart from NigeCh, who is clearly quite mad, but super - is moribund and suitable to M&S returns counter.

Re: Mobile goal posts!

Without thinking too much about it, I'll go for F8 in hp.

(Effect being proportional to work done, air heavier in hp).

Re: come off it...

You start a post calling everyone a girl's blouse for not wanting to have a hole in their hull in order to enable the boat to repel water when breached. A few people seek to gain clarification for your 'potty plan' and you let rip!

Your signature reads:

....I think only half of that is true!

Lighten up a bit Opinionated - I've enjoyed the thread so far...
