Don't want to be fuelling any new arguments but this seriously p***ed me off!

Same situation as last post, doing course in displacement boat. I waited til last to take my turn in driving, as last person gets to put boat away. So we get to putting boat away and i make my approach and pull alongside with 2 crew members holding ropes ready.

I was really proud as i didnt make any cock-ups and used the wind and tide to my advantage.

My crew consisted of a water skiing and a yachtie. that was my mistake!

They're doing a powerboat instructors course and didnt have a clue how to throw a rope or tie up a boat, they just stood there all the time making no attempt to do anything. Consequenlty i got blown and moved and looked a prat!

Now feeling quite p***ed off and bitchy I made them wait for the bus for an hour rather than give them a lift in my car.

Why can't yachties and others throw a rope?

Re: Why indeed?

Now Suzanne,

Put that big tar brush away, you can't tar us all with that. If only I lived a little closer I would organise a competition between stinkies and raggies to settle this, perhaps one of our local readers will take up the challenge and publish the results for all to see.

You see, raggies don't have unlimited power when berthing and with a deep keel have to make more allowance for the tide, together with more windage for the rig. This combination has produced a high percentage of very good rope chuckers.

You have my sympathy in that you were very unlucky on the day, but that's no excuse to tar us all.

A Yachtie would expect the helm to get close enough to pass a rope. If you need to throw it there is something wrong.

Anyhow Ive never seen a stinkie who needed to use ropes. They all seem to arrive looking like Captain Ahab with Boathooks like Harpoons ready to be thrust at anything which looks soft enough to puncture.

Re: Who\'s in charge

Being a stinkpot myself I must say I do agree on this one, nearly lost the wife overboard because we both assumed the opposite at an important moment - captian or crew should make it clear what they intend to do. There is never any harm in good communication, esspecially when mooring up.

We get plenty of practice on the Thames with all those locks :)

The sort of comment that does nothing to ease the antagonism between Sailing and Motor Boating owners.

Suzanne should know better too.

A major reason why motor boaters throw ropes is that the freeboard of their boats is often significant, and would make alighting on to a low and possibly unstable pontoon, very dangerous.
Sailing yachts tend to have lower freeboard. Therefore alighting and taking a turn is quite acceptable.

Re: Why indeed?

Not seen many in our marina. Most of them take a flying leap or chuck a loosly disguised string vest at a hapless passer-by.

What do you mean the sea gull in front's walking !!!

quite right
if they don't know how
it is the skippers fault as you should have shown them.

can't stand those bawling skipper types who shout at crew.

Maybe, just once, someone will call me sir without adding, you're making a scene

Well I'll have some sympathy for you if no one else. I once asked some one to throw a rope round a cleat. He did. All the bloody lot!!

Re: Who\'s in charge

Maybe i didnt make myself clear, on approach I asked for 2 crew members (one on the bow and one on the stern). My Instructor then told them that we would be tieing up as usual and that they knew how to. They nodded. After we had eventually moored up they got a slight ticking off from our instructor. I wasn't in the wrong at all, the fact of the mattter was that they had no idea how to throw a rope!

My theory was then again backed up yesterday, this time though a bloke was at the helm and i was just an observer. After they failed to tie up again not only did the bloke call them 'a name', the instructor told them to stay behind for a lesson in being crew.

Re: Who\'s in charge

All sounds very complicated to me. Whats all this about INSTRUCTORS. What is one of them. OBSERVERS what are these. Why TWO crew members. Surely it's only wizzing up to pontoon. Tutts lassoo's cleat at the front. then the one at the back. Who needs Instruction. Not even Tutts!!

Now heres a proper problem. I've just been and bought a new computer. To replace the 95 model. Many times up graded and sticking plaster applied. Long since forgot how to get one working. Might not hear from me again!!!

The best rope throwers around tend to be the ladies who crew on the Thames - with the high freeboard on most cruisers, and locks every few miles, they get an awful lot of practice. My wife is superb at it having had 5 years on the river before moving to the South Coast- must enter her into a rope throwing contest in a Rodeo some time!!

Actually she's pretty good without a rope too - if I'm seen chatting up another woman at a party, just one of her looks from the other side of the room will 'reel' me in to her side in an instant!!. Frightening (Dublin born) lady!!
