What lessons for this week

Sally a 1930's pretty 25' racing yacht had a new engine squeezed in, was launched and driven up the river to our pontoons.
All was well until our engineer checked the oil and found a trace of water on the dipstick.
Investigation found it was the old anti siphon which was blocked with salt crystals, panic over.

Isn't that the point at which you start to panic? Surely it means that water has entered via the exhaust valves and cylinders?

Lifted my own boat out today, for her annual wash and anti foul plus sort out the sticky rudder bearings.
There was some good and bad news though.
The good was just how clean she was after 9 months in the water.
The photos below show how un-fouled she was before I washed her down.
The saildrive leg was spotless - that had International Trilux on it so that'll be happening again.
The hull had Jotun Mare Nostrum antifoul which though pricey seems to have done its job.
The bad news was the Gori two blade folding prop that was polished to mirror and had a lot of barnacles on it, but worse the £450 I spent last year on a new vulcanized bush looks to be a waste as the dammed thing is wobbling about all over the place, again.
Not happy and somewhat ironic as it looks like we'll miss our planned trip to Belgium at the end of the month as the prop will have to be sent back to, you guessed it, Belgium, to be repaired !!

Out of interest, where in Belgium do you send your prop to? I'm based in Belgium and have so far worked with the Dutch dealer in Zierikzee, as I thought there was no Gori dealer in Belgium.
I have the same problem with barnacles on a polished prop. I'm tempted to try out the antifouling with which Vyv Cox seems to have good results, but am a bit doubtful about painting a folding prop.

I've painted my Bruntons folding prop with Velox so if you're happy to wait a year I can tell you how it went!
(After undercoat and two fairly think coats of the Velox it would still fold up fine so no problems there.)

A couple of updates -

The bendy boat is still bendy so we've settled on a stable 6% - (7% and above and you can't close the forward door into the forepeak.
The issue was the customer ordered 7mm wire caps and 8mm lowers instead of the usual 6 and 7mm and omitted to tell us.
Frankly I should have noticed straight away, so my bad.......

Duff info re the Prop - its not Belgium its Denmark thats the home for Gori props.
In the UK the dealer is Sillette who inexplicably appear to have closed until next week, grrrr
We contacted Gori HQ at http://www.steelteam.dk/ via email today and will be interested to see what they have to say.
The contact for Belgium is

Which as you pointed out is NOT Belgium - Plonkers.

Tried to organise some Jefa rudder bearings today, again via the UK distributor and again no answer - how do people stay in business??

Fell off my chair again after buying a Raymarine 10m digital radar extension cable for £94
It's basically the final straw now with Raymarine as we've a list as long as your arm of issues so I think we'll be just going with Garmin, Navico (lowrance, B&G, Simrad) and Digital Yacht.
I'll take a photo of a full Raymarine refit tomorrow if I remember, compare to the others its a nightmare.

The Ovni bow thruster project is just about done.
Just some more fairing and then Awlgrip Hullguard epoxy primer.
Tests on a previous scalloped design on a Southerly look to be really good so pretty positive about our idea.

First 2 shots are after the welding and a coat of hullguard, inside and out.

The next couple are of the boat, now out of shed 2, and part way though the fairing process.
I'll take a shot of it completed in the next day or so.

Oh and a little aside,
We play a little game on what comes on when turning isolators, seacocks on when launching a boat.

Today I launched a big-ish twin wheel Jeanneau, turned the isolators on and the widescreen TV came on with daytime Ch4.
The boat came in last week from Lowestoft I think and was slipped straight away before it needed to moor up........

That's how they stay in business.

I'm enjoying your honesty and frankness, it's very refreshing.

Yes, great posts. By car I visited Southwold two weeks ago for the first time ever after reading this thread and walked past the boatshed on the way to the chippy.

I thought about saying to the three guys cogitating inside 'are you Javelin? I love your posts' but restrained myself! :D

Always cut away from oneself when using a Stanley knife. Same goes for any cutting implement like chisels, knives, drills, grinders, etc...

My lesson learnt was.
Was fitting a duel filter and fuel lines just as back up. Needed to make a tight curve in 8mm tube I have a pipe bender but at such a tight angle the top of bend starts to flatten, then I remembered something I had seen on TV. So I took the pipe blocked one end filled with water sealed the other end popped in freezer. Few hours later removed it and put bend in, came out perfect, you can do it with sand but I haven't had as good a result as with the ice.
P

Nice tip re the tube bending and also the cutting away from yourself, though I tend to to that and dig into my leg instead.

The customer is always right should be rewritten to, The Customer should be persuaded, cajoled, bribed or as a last resort, threatened.
Being right has nothing to do with it.
However until that day comes we'll stay with, encouraged in a particular direction.

One that we couldn't agree with, either with the customer or within the yard was should the topsides of the Ovni be sprayed as well.
We'd stripped all the fittings off on the deck and got rid of the corrosion before coating with awlgrip.
She's had new windows instead of the ugly 8' strips of dark perspex, new wind genny, new profurl staysail furler and the bowthruster.
Question is should we have painted the topsides as well instead of the bare ally?

(I wanted Flag Blue, but then I always want flag Blue.....)
