We have a new to us boat with an Quick Aries 1000 12V anchor windless. This is very noisy when operated in either direction (0n no load, chain not on gypsy), (different noise in each direction), I suspect that the bearings may be nackered but I am unsure. I believe this winch is supposed to be filled with oil, and not sure if it is or not. Does anyone know if its a difficut job to remove the gearbox and motor, strip down and replace the bearings. I see that Spares Marine will sell a new complete gearbox for circa £365, which may be an option. Of course, it could be the motor which is making the noise, difficult to tell since both units are attached. I have the manual with exploded diagram showing bearings for the vertical shaft but nothing shown for the motor. It all looks pretty clean and I understand it has been off before, so hopefully the mounting bolts are not to seized. Any advice appreciated.
