UGH !!

Weather dropped and even though forecast is for temps to go up slightly - I don't like idea of leaving the boat anymore so decided to run her round to the public slipway ....

Trailer in water ... wind about 7 - 8m/s across the slip ... me on shore doing the hand signals to my mate driving the boat (we had to decide how to do it ... he drive the car with trailer - me the boat or vv.).

Every time boat hit the rollers and started to ride up - wind would push back end off line .. we tried again and again ... eventually with trailer half out of water - using the 170hp to get the boat to roll on ... but still she wouldn't line up ... in the end we just accepted that she was not square on trailer ... and took her home ....

Later I will jack her up in combination with the HIAB on my truck and move the trailer into better position under her.

One thing we found out ... which confirmed our earlier thoughts ... the balance point of the boat / trailer combo is literally just cms in front of the wheels when she's aligned. With her not true on the trailer and sitting about 20cms back from correct ... balance is just BEHIND wheels ... when I put jockey wheel down and pulled the lever on the hitch .. boat and trailer sat back on the outdrive leg ... luckily not hard.
Jacked her back level and blocks under transom.

My accounts manager is not going to be happy ... I want a better trailer.

I did that with my 20ft cuddy. Boat about 300mm from the bow snubber thing.

I wondered why the hitch was hard to release.

Got some molegrips on the lever, then BANG.

Hitch reared up, boat pivoted backwards and grounded on the back. Luckily outboard trimmed up so no damage except to a chip on the gellcoat.

Grp filler, sanded down then sealed as I applied Silic one.

If I'd have been straddling the hitch then my eyes would have watered.

Rookie error, especially as I've been towing and recovering boats for years.

I was lucky.....

Life's one big classroom !!

I've been moving boats .. on-off trailers in yards - from / to water for over 40yrs ... but each time can have another unique factor ....

It also did not help that this boat originally had a 4cyl 130hp engine - that previous owner removed and mounted a 6cyl 170hp engine ... it makes her more tail-heavy and also when you move the single lever into gear - its a distinct shove from that engine ... there's no subtlety to it !!

When I DECIDE !!

Got to find a trailer .... braked twin axle ... suitable for 2 tons 24ft boat. Looked online and cannot find so far in Latvia .. there must be - just needs to find.

The trailer I have is good - but too short ... and single axle unbraked.
We were looking long and hard for a suitable twin axle braked trailer for our 2 tonne 7.5m boat, second hand, finally found one and the shop was open to late the guy had sold it that morning and was just putting a boat on it.
New they are looking for about €6,000 for one, and any S/H ones would need a bit of modification to accommodate the Saildrive

Get a bit welded into it to make it longer??
A cut-and-shut job??

It can be done to cars and boats so why not to trailers.

No good really ... the trailer is for less weight and also not very good in guiding boat onto rollers .. she is at this moment sitting with a 10 - 15 deg list on the trailer - which will need jacking up and then trailer repositioned to get her level. It needs a second set of wheels and anyway - it cannot be roda registered. (Over here trailers have separate Road Traffic Inspection ... "MOT" unlike UK).
Weather is atrocious out there so will be a day or so before I can sort her onto trailer better.

With the boat sitting with its CoG just behind the wheels - jacking up will have to be extremely careful with transom jacked up first to prevent boat sitting on its arse again.

That VP 6cyl engine is behind those rear rollers !

The more I study that picture ... this is how I bought her and taken once home ... look at the bow winch .. no way could that boat have been winched to that position ... she must have been craned on

3 trolley jacks ready ... 12 building blocks ready ... plenty wood ready ...

Will jack up boat - 2 jacks at transom ... third jack at bow ... get her levelled and then re-position trailer under her to set back on.

I've found trailer to suit her ... just waiting for dealer to confirm price and when available...... boat can stay on old trailer through winter ... if I can get her balanced as day I bought so not 'tail-heavy' - then I will probably launch her off the old trailer in spring.

Wife is interested that I said with better trailer - we can explore other rivers and lakes ....

Still waiting info from dealer about the Respo trailer I picked .... Multiroller is 5450 euros ... the same frame but with less rollers (actually better placed as I will have transducers etc) is 4950 euros .....

We sold the boat before we found a trailer but those prices are getting close to what you would pay for a new custom built trailer

You sure ? I lived near Hayling Trailers for years in UK and I doubt they could be near for such ....

RESPO piekabe 2700V802T230 | Laivu Depo

Remember also thats Euros not £
As I'm based in the EU I was thinking in Euros too. At the Boot show last year we went round the various trailer manufactures there and around €6k was the best we could find for a trailer to take our 7.5m 2 tonne Casper.
As we sold Casper 2 weeks ago it is no longer our problem :) Though the new owner asked for help to sail Casper back to Ghent.

6K is a bit more than 4.9K .... or 5.5K for the multiroller version.....

Honest ? Very few boats require custom trailers .... especially a motorboat like mine. As long as rear guide rollers - keel rollers and side arm rollers - she's fine.

Still it was getting to an appreciable fraction of the cost of the boat. The quotes were for a non standard customised trailer to fit the underwater profile of Casper with the skeg and Saildrive

I picked up the boat 'on the cheap' ..... the trailer is more than I paid for the boat ... 6cyl petrol engine here is a bit too much cost for people here to run and those who can afford that - buy some fancy gin-palace floating cocktail boat in Riga ...

Emailed dealer to see if any winter price deal on the RESPO piekabe 2700V802T230 | Laivu Depo - seeing as most boats are lifted now and trailer sales will be slow till next season ....
At least I don't need a trailer anymore as the boat is sold
2nd hand here varies from €4250+vat to €8950 (Was €11,617 inc vat new) for a 3500kg gross weight boat trailer

can't you move the axle a bit back? Looks like it could go 20-30cm aft.
OK understand that would be a temp solution...
