(Mates boat) the exhaust elbow has the usual 3 slots but none corresponding on the manifold. He reckons its all original steel, or does he need to dig into it and open them out?

I seem to recall that the same elbow was used for the turbo and non turbo version of the 2003. 28hp and 43hp.

The turbo version had some form of riser between the elbow and block which was why the additional holes are there.

That sounds right. I don't think the manifold on the 2003 has holes corresponding to the slots in the exhaust elbow; I'm not absolutely certain, but I don't recall seeing them when I had my exhaust elbow off.

ITYWF that when a riser is fitted the water from both the thermostat and the bypass flow from the back of the cylinder head enters the riser and flows via matching slots to the elbow. When there is no riser both water flows enter the elbow directly .
There is no water flow from the cylinder head/ exhaust manifold so there are no slots in it

The local agent has come back and said dont worry, as long as the straight external pipe and the curly
one on the back of the block are good.
(No turbo and no riser under elbow)
My 2003 certainly has three slots lined up (in the manifold) and they like to clog up.
