Southampton Water Activities Centre are usually happy for people to come onto the tail of their one-day courses and just sit the exam.

Either
A) Self study using the RYA booklets "VHF Radio (incl GMDSS)" and "VHF Radio SRC Assessments" and then sitting the exam directly rather than through a school or educational institute. The charge for sitting the exam was, if I remember correctly, £19.

or B) Obtain a copy of the questions (complete with answers) Learn the answers to each question and then sit the exam.

or C) take a one day course and do the exam at the same time

C) although not the cheapest will give you a good practical grounding in radio ettiquette and procedures.

AS for costs, booklets ~£8 for both, exam fee ~£22
course (all inclusive ~65 so the additional in taking the exam as part of a course is only ~£35

The exam questions are taken at random from a FIXED list of questions so if you crib up on all possible questions you should not have a problem passing the exam.
