RIP Oberleutnant Adalbert Schnee:
Presumed dead after spending his post-war years lecturing on submarine warfare.
He was the man in command of the U boat that killed my grandfather in his unarmed decrepit merchantman in convoy.
errrr... what was the object of this exercise?

No one mentioned him either.

He was an enemy once, but any man who fought in the Great War was a brave man.

Especially the krauts, given the fact they were fighting such superior forces....

Funny really. They wanted to commemorate his death this week, but decided that "any form of commemoration of military events is seen as problematic here."

Having toured the battlefields of Flanders and visited probably all of the cemeteries, both allied and axis, one can't help but feel for both friend and foe who were sent unwittingly to their slaughter.

I remember meeting Russian soldiers in East Berlin and then other ex soviet troops after the fall of the Iron Curtain, they were just squaddies. Nothing more and nothing less.

Respect ---and thanks to all of those chaps, my Dad was one too.
I`m still here because of their efforts, and will be eternally grateful, and I wish he could have met his grandchildren!

In a nutshell.

War: old men sending young men out to die too soon.

My old man offered to go in 39, he was in for the duration,

No One Sent Him, had fun when at Dunkirk, no doubt.

My son is there, Afghanistan b,cos he is paid for it,

My daughter was there b,cos she enjoyed the life,

My Son inlaw flys choppers for the Marines, for many years, inc N.I., Iraqx2, , he was not forced either, he enjoys it, most of the time,

As my kids say it,s better than working, "most of the time".

Don,t be too sentimental, they aren,t!

They were not all SENT, No One "SENT" any of the three of MINE,
or the OLD MAN.

You misunderstand me. The army, navy, RAF or the marines don't suddenly decide to go to NI, Bosnia, Kosovo, Sierra Leone, Falklands, Iraq, Afghanistan and the other places. The government (The old men) sent us there but, we go and do the job because that is what we signed up to do.

I was lucky, much of my career was spent in NI, being shot at and Germany, waiting for the soviet hordes and just before I retired, being bombed, mostly by the Americans, in Bosnia. Not bad for 22 years service and a picnic compared with this century.

The services today are constantly engaged in high intensity war and many are dying, all because of a lie. But, that does not take one iota of respect and admiration I have for the lads and lasses on the ground.

They've been particularly good at that ever since WWII
