Hi Martin,

How are you both? Would be good to have a drink or two!

I agree with you, why on earth should motor boat owners learn so much of the jargon that goes with sailing? is it important that we know what luffing, reefing or what a sheet is? I think not, but it is practical that we perhaps try and understand what problems a skipper of a sail boat has so that we can avoid sharing the same piece of water at the same time!!

I think it would be a great idea to have a day or two out on a sail boat to try and understand more about them, not many sail boat owners would think in the same way! they seem to feel we are a bit beneath them some how! not really proper skippers!

Hope you are enjoying the boat,

Regards Barry

Has a yacht skipper actually ever said this to you, or is this just a chip on a lapel. Not all who go sailing are Henry's who take an instant dislike to a fellow motor boater, it takes a good few encounters with an idiot skipper for us to recognise which boat it actually was, they do look similar. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Do you hate sailing or just the skippers?

I really hate the stinkie/raggie thing, there's no need for it. However it is fueled by antagonistic comments here and on the other forums (eg in last 24 hours by Clive on PBO, and kds on scuttlebutt), despite the fact that 99.9+% of forumites quite happy to co-exist side by side, and some even partake of both types of boating

It's only the small minded on both sides who have any problems with each other, genuine sailors (both stinkies and raggies) co-exist very happily in my experience and have respect for each other. We both pour vast amounts of our hard earned dosh into a hole in the ocean or into waterside bars.

Re: Oil

i agree. Just cos some people are total luddites, whereas some others have actually recognised the capabilities of decent engines surely doesn't mean we shouldn't get along, does it?

Personally, i think if anyone is nasty to raggies, then the mobos should be dispatched to drive round and round them until they go bonkers, and if anyone is nasty to mobos then all the raggies should point and laugh at their knots. That way i am pretty sure we'd all learn our lesson and get along much better. Possibly.

Re: Oil

I too reformed my raggie tendancy at an early age, well about 40'ish I think, mind the National Osprey was a bit of a beast, but almost motorboaty in performance. But it's not only us that segragates. All the HM's do. Why's that. I've heard folk say it's about different shapes, but I cant go along with that, maybe if we all mucked in together more there would be less of a problem. After all segregation is illegal in all other walks of life.

Re: Oil

I've wondered about the segregation also, and agree with your observations. Only 2 possibilities;

1) Different hull shapes as Mobos tend to carry their beam. No problem for me on outside, slightly trickier for Mobo outside. Mobos stack well, raggies not so well except 40ft ish plus.

2) They want to prevent a brawl. I've only heard of this once from my crew on return to the boat, but it was ugly and unpleasant and there were kids on both boats. Put everyone to shame. Keep looking for either boat to give them my personal assesment of their behaviour.

Only thing I don't like being rafted next to a big Mobo is having to watch their telly or feel I'm being overlooked, but thats just a territorial thing.

Re: Oil

May your snug insulation drift into the bilges as the no nails loses its tenuous grip, and your newly sharpened checkerplate wear your deck shoes to ribbons.

BTW, why fitting insulation? Staying local for a while?

Re: eh pardon?

sorry old bean, can't hear you for the racket of these 25litre diesels!! "Insulation" on planing powerboats is always always an issue of noise, not heat! They're not bad now but i wantem SILENT.

Haso. It's raggie brawling that keeps us apart. So HM are being very sencible and saving us from missing Coronation street. Good for them. Oh well, never said. I tried!!

My brother has been a yachtsman for many years now. I have been sailing with him on plenty of occasions and ended up in a bar full of other yachtsmen, when listening to their general chat it is quite obvious that many do feel this way! In contrast I have nothing against yachtsman at all, other than when they are sailing thay seem to take no notice of how many yachts are around and tacking in all different directions leaving a motor vessel no route through at all!
