Re: Yes, do a bit of sailing

If your serious Haydn, I'd gladly give way to power if I'm on a reach but not on a beat or run. Of course, I'd have to make sure you understood the difference and perhaps this is why the rule is simplified.

The superiority comes from the ability to switch on an engine if necessary and still make a cuppa. Meanwhile, we sail and you should be on yer knees whenever we're passed at speed...

As National Osprey sailing champion of Rawtensall!! I want to ask why cant you give way when on a beat?? You can bear away, or tack. If on a run, you can stear towards the wind or jibe, though this can be problamatical to the unskilled, i'll admit, and with the spinaker up, a bit of a faf. But should all be within the skills of any seaman worth his salt..

Why do I need to be on my knees?? I cannot see a bloody thing!!

Yes we make a cuppa at twenty knots, some times bacon butties as well. And the women folk bring them up the fly bridge.

You mean raggies can make them at 4 knots. Sheesh!!!..../forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Humble pardons, Lord Nippy of Rawtensall.

On a beat I am very often trying to weather a mark - granted, should know better by now. Hence will hang onto my conjugals as long as poss. Downwind, the pain of a course alteration is unspeakable, as you will know. Which leaves a reach where I'm happy to yield to all.

As for being on your knees, I was merely referring to maintaining your balance on the flybridge.

This took some finding, but well worth the effort.!!

Once upon a time.
God had got a bit pissed off with this problem and tried in vane to sort it.

God spoke unto the rag boaties and said Oh-Yah Oh-Yah and thee shall have right of way over all the seven seas !!.

He'd tried everything else he could think of first and in the end he talked to the motor boaties about his problem.

It transpired that God had made a few cockups when programming the rag boaties brains and God was feeling a bit guilty about this blunder.

"Never mind" said the helpfull motor boaties, "just give them some bits of string to play with and everybody else will just kept out of the bloody way" !!.

Not wanting to offend the poor raggies, it was decided to keep the reasons for this new rule secret.
So it transpired that the raggies got right of way.

Unfortunatly the raggies as usual, got rag over stick about this new decision and thought that they were the chosen race and superior to the motor boatie tribe.

They decided to use this new rule to keep the motor boatie surfs in there place.

They were also a bit miffed about the way the motor boaties could sail in and out of marinas without a big crew to fend the boat off all the time and not going round and round in circles bumping into every thing in sight and blaming every body else for there problems.

They got a bit mixed up about the "chosen race" and the "yacht race" too, so it became sacred.

So for ever and ever amen the motor boatie tribe has had this cross to bare and secret to keep.

Cos we cant tell the kids that Gods make cockups too!!

And so they all lived, sort of, fairly, happy-ish, everafter, Amen.

Re: Stinking

This took some hacking, but well worth the effort.!!

Once upon a time, God had got a bit pissed off with this problem and tried in vane (spelling vain) to sort it.

God spoke unto the MOBOs and said Oh-Yah Oh-Yah and thee shall believe you have right right of way over all the seven seas !!.

He'd tried everything else he could think of first and in the end he talked to the raggies about his problem.

It transpired that God had made a few cockups when programming the MOBOs' brains and God was feeling a bit guilty about this blunder.

"Never mind" said the ever helpful and polite raggies, "just give them some smelly, wash-making tupperware and everybody else will just kept out of the bloody way" !!.

Not wanting to offend the poor MOBOs, it was decided to keep the reasons for this new rule secret. So it transpired that the MOBOs believed that they had right of way.

Unfortunatly ( Unfortunately - spelling) the MOBOs as usual, got their pistons in a twist about this new decision and thought that they were the chosen race and superior to the raggie tribe.

They decided to use this new rule to keep the raggie surfs (serfs - spelling) in there (their - spelling) place.

They were also a bit miffed about:
1 the way the raggies could sail in and out of marinas without a a bow thruster, two engines and enough electronics to fly to Saturn and not going round and round in circles bumping into every thing in sight and blaming every body else for there problems.
2 the way that yachts don't stink the marina out
3 the way that yachts can move, even with no diesel
4 and the fact that even God went to sleep listening to them weaseling on about red diesel
5 that yachties can spell

They got a bit mixed up about the "chosen race" and the "power boat race" too, so it became sacred.

So for ever and ever amen the raggie tribe has had this cross to bare and secret to keep.

Cos we can't tell the kids that Gods make cockups too!!

And so they all lived, sort of, fairly, miserably, everafter, Amen.

Re: Stinking

Yup its obvious god was a sailor not a stinky cos he made the wind freely available but hid all the diesel away in rocks and fings deep in the ground, quite near hell until HLB ate an apfel off the scree of carnage and learned how to make a boat wif an injun.

Having been around guns and shooting types in one form or another for years, I'm appalled at the idea that anyone would point a gun at a stranger, Matt. Has this happened to you?

Well they do say that imitation is the best form of Flattery. I wrote that in about 2001. Like I said. Took some finding.../forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

no - i tried to write that post "as if" this happened. Obviously failed. I have never really seen a gun, much less used one. Mind you, it would be just as bad if you knew the person and it wasn't a stranger, wouldn't it?

Re: Yes, do a bit of sailing

<Anyone launched a rescue boat from a ship underway? It's the most unbelievably exciting thrill to hit the water doing 5-6 knots and to have to peel away quick to avoid the towed gear astern. Recovery is just as exciting.>

Yes I have and never found it that exciting! In fact doing it in the dark with a goodly sea running whether it was in the N.Sea or the Gulfo de Paria, I found to be rather scary. However it wasn't half as scary as having to jump from a disused oil platform directly onto the survey ship when the sea was too rough to use a tender.

Re: Yes, do a bit of sailing

Wouldn't dream of doing it now, but was single in those days and loved it every time. I was Mobo coxn on several of our ships, and it brought benefits including the odd run ashore for papers and whatever else you could sneak into a dry suit. Dry ships, you see?

Atlantic in fog felt a bit lonely in the little boat, though, especially as we didn't have radar so VHF comms to the bridge were vital. During our training, I remember being told that a risk assessment had identified it as the most dangerous procedure on board. That was back in 90, but this thread has confirmed what they told us - we were the only ones daft enough to do it apart from RN!

When you say <jump from a disused oil platform directly onto the survey ship> I take it you don't mean from a height, or did you use a basket/crane?

Re: Yes, do a bit of sailing

Nothing so sophisticated in the 'Andrew' - the end of the line to the ship simply had an eye splice in it and it was connected to the seaboat by passing the eye through another eye on the end of a short painter and securing it with a wooden toggle (this could easily be pulled out to slip the boat when launching). Problem with the RIB was the eye was on the end of a short line attached to the eyebolt on the bow of the boat on the waterline. Had to lean over the bow to get hold of it - bit tricky in rough weather!

Re: Yes, do a bit of sailing

Ye daft buggers, we worked out for ourselves how to make it safer. The boat painter had a light line attached to the lifting frame so we never had to grapple with the end.

It's happened to me once. Never went shooting with the person again - think he soon got booted out of the syndicate he was in anyway.
Oh and re. the thread I think it's very difficult to go through the RYA qualifications without spending time on a saily boat thingy. Personally think it's good training for we lesser mortals.

Re: Yes, do a bit of sailing

We had a gate guard on one morning, a bit of a loon by all accounts. I remember driving in and this dick following me with his SA80 watching down the sights.

When I got into my building everyone was talking about it, he had followed each car as it drove past his post. The Guard commander had been informed and he was never seen on camp again.

Gun was definitely loaded, unknown if he had one in the barrel or the safety on, but a pretty scary experience. I remember doing that double take, did he, did he just do what I think he did. The guards generally carry the gun across their waste.

I wonder if he visited the glass house?
