Re: A Punt

Nope. That's something different entirely - vide Gaff Rig by John Leather for what a punt is down Falmouth way. Briefly, it did a similar job to a pilot cutter.

Re: A Punt

Our side of the river a punt is a 10/12 foot single oar sculling / rowing boat, most now have gained outboards. Used to get out to the working boats, or now yachts.
Think you are refering to the Falmouth Quay Punts, around 35 foot gaff rigged, used for local transport, or as a lighter to large ships.

Re: A Punt

Here in Cambridge we use Punts as a cheap form of entertainment.

We rent them out to the tourists, get 1 of them to stand on the 2 ft square flat deck at 1 end and give him/her (The Punter) an 12 ft long pole to push the punt up the river with.

They then head of up river bouncing the punt of each side of the river or other punts. usually someone manages to take a dip.

If they get as far as Trinity College Bridge the Punter can get the pole stuck in the sticky mud between there and Garret Hostel Lane bridge and keep hold of the pole whilst the punt continues up the river. Record for hanging on to the pole is about 2 minutes.

Great entertainment on a summer Sunday afternoon!
