Old Volvo Engines

I know its not same ... but the Perkins 4-107 I have in my boat (43HP) is an old 'junker' ...

My 4-99 seized and I was offered the 4-107 as a straight drop in .... vintage probably late 60's mid 70's engine. Hard to tell as the serial number was sent to Perkins and they couldn't identify it except to say - it was most likely a stationary power plant engine from very early days of the 107 ...

Guy had taken it out of his Rustler 30 and left it in the yard ... it was put on a pallet and put to back of shed ... years later I gave 250 quid for it subject to it actually starting.
Yard diesel guy - Alan - fitted the engine after checking it still turned over. Few squirts of juice and she fired up ....

That engine is still doing a very good job in my boat over 15yrs later ..... runs smooth as sewing machine.

Just after I brought the boat over here - I had trouble with the injection pump ... it was gummed up .... had a diesel engineer at the boat .. he sorted the pump ... checked over the general running and reckoned she'd outlast me !!

Agree with markc
Just get her bought Graeme, young fella me lad
You know you want to!
?
Those 6 cyl 80 ish hp things?
as markc said
Just looked at the pics
At that price, There’s lovely isn’t it!

the core engines are probably lovely - 2 x 80Hp pushing that boat at displacement speeds no stress at all.
the cooling system bits could be getting on a bit, however worst case, although parts could be hard to find, I would have thought a decent machine shop could modify a new off the shelf intercooler if needed, or make/repair the cores.

If they run OK with no undue smoke or strange noises I'd be more interested in spares availability. It certainly looks a cracker for the money though.

I owned a 30 ft Royal for many years I re engine her with a pair of TMD40 back in the 80s. She is still going strong all these years later after having a major re fit on the Thames. They were a very capable sea boat as well as a docile river boat. It was one my three favorite boats ever owned by me
The original Volvo engines are actually Peaugot industrial engine marinized by Volvo. There weakness was a aluminium head on a cast block and suffered from head and gasket problems. But besides that no worse than any other 50 year old engine. The only other problem with her she will not have handed props so the handling is tricky till you get used to her.

Years ago .... Volvo was literally one company but different divisions ... there was a Tri-Party agreement called the PRV Agreement. They produced not only the engines for 7 and 9 series cars but trucks ... industrial and marine ...

PRV = Peugeot Renault Volvo

As previously suggested they most certainly are Md 32 based on indedenor tractor units with probably RB gearboxes
they got a relatively bad reputation as most were fitted to faster boats and worked too hard
from memory 108 (pony not horse) power at about 3800 rpm but the derated units lasted far better
spares never were cheap after Volvo added on to peugot prices and now hard to find I have been retired over 10years and they were hard enough to find then
I would suggest looking at pricing replacement engines and boxes and base your decisions on having to replace in the near future and would not think about any repairs
volvo produced the 40 series to replace the 32 but there was no comunallity at all
