I have spent a very frustrating few days on the boat. From buying the boat, there has been the unresolved issue of raw water flow on the starboard engine. In fault finding, I was all over both engines and that (possibly a coincidence) led to the port engine starting fine, then faltering and dying. I have examined everything very carefully and can find no fault. Filters are under 12 months and 5 hours old.

I opened the primary CAV filter for that engine and all was well. Manually pumping fuel through, I got diesel to the secondary filter bleed point and then bled the injectors. I was able to start the engine and it ran for ten seconds or so before faltering and dying again. I have done that three times, so clearly there is a fuel restriction or air leak that I have yet to find. I don't have spare filters but will get some to try on Tuesday.

Fuel lines are all in good condition, compression fittings all tight and flexibles in good order together with their clips. The starboard engine if fed from the same fuel tank and that will start and run perfectly well until it gets too hot due to the raw water issue.

Can you run direct from a small jerry can of fuel with a few extra bits of pipe, to eliminate issues/air/blockages/leaks in the majority of the feed pipework and filters?

It is something that I could try I suppose if the filters don't change the situation. Everything says that it was something I did, but nothing had come to light.

Sounds like a knackered fuel lift pump. It could be an air leak somewhere between the fuel tank and the pump so that the pump is just sucking air - or that the pump does not pump.
