New Boat - all to get underwater lights!

A coach carrying British school children on a ski holiday also crashed in France recently, fortunately only one death. It was the school where my best mate's daughters go, and it's only by chance that they didn't go on the ski trip this time, as they've been in previous years. Last year my mate went as an assistant, and shared a room with the teacher who died in the crash.

The moral of the story is to buy a boat and not worry too much about the cost, as you never know when your number's up.

Oh so right nick, I have some very fond memories of a person who was very dear to me who loved boating, whos life was taken way before his time.

+1
in 2010 I posted on here the story of a small fishing boat purchase in Conwy (Beneteau 620) for my favourite uncle,
that we trailed all down to Calpé / Moraira in Spain,
He enjoyed that boat for just one short season,
.............................
I've just finished the resale of that boat,
to a lucky britisch chap in Gibraltar.

I now have contact details for the ex Victron guy who has a marine electrics business near Split. He's English and will be able to help me out. I'll certainly show him your drawing

tell him there are two OMRON K8AB-VS monitoring relais + a few standard relais inside the box, this might give him a clue how it works.

I'm convinced that such a box would be a solution for you,
the victron might be a nice addition,
but believe me, with just the Victron and one 16A line, you don't get a solution !!!

Even if you can cope with the start current from your airco compressor, you have little to no spare power for other equipment.
If you start using more energy from the Victron's power assist function, very quickly your battery's will be empty,
and after that, you will need most of the 16Amps, for recharging the battery's. And then you're even further from home (a Belgium saying :) )

I'm a fan of Victron, we use them since many years in professional applications (radio OB Vans) aswell as in all my previous boats,
good reliable products, good service from the factory,
but you can't expect them to "generate" energy if supply is limited.

In my eyes, the "power assist" fuction has little to no use in a boat,
perhaps only to cope with a motor "start" current.

This came with the boat but I can see some use when on a short pontoon!
Bit puzzled by that. Would you not tend to reverse into a mooring with a short finger in which case, why wouldn't you use the bathing platform to get off the boat?

I have exactly the same dishwasher/fridge freezer leer draws, and the dishwasher is excellent (coming from the F34 we had before). Which AV package did you get? B&O?

Paul.

Paul,

She is a stock boat and didn't have the B & O setup which I had on the SQ55 which was amazing. I will see how I get on with the AV this year and update it over the Winter.

Super cool boat! Very similar spec to mine.... Even the same fly ridge seats. I think I got a lot of 58 gear as mine was the last 55 to leave Fairline.

I hated storing those steps (which double as the bathing platform ladder for emergencies), so Ive had a mount added beind the cockpit steps. Feel free to look around mine... It's going in the water today I think.... The solution Nick Barke organised was perfect.

Deleted User if you want, I can draw you a diagram for making something like this:

CEE16A32AcombinerA4L1.jpg

a safe 2 x 16A combiner; the unit won't combine/link when no equal voltage on both 16A connectors.
a few controll lights on the box could be usefull.

if you have a local electric engineer who can wire a few relay's and 2 Limit value relay's, you have what you want for not too much money.
If you really insist I can have one made here in the company.
(need to find time first)

How would you stop feedback from one input into another once they have both been 'energised'. Say the relay doesn't close unless both inputs have a live supply, but once they are live and thus joined by a relay both would appear to continue to be live even if the supply from one was removed?

...the birds you see sitting on 440,000volt power lines without sizzling to death.

Actually you don't get birds sitting on the HV lines. They will tolerate lesser voltages but not the very high voltage ones. Such voltages and Inductance means that even they will feel current flow.

Can be seen here:

yes you're right about that,
system is a bit unsafe when someone pulls out one plug when live,
lets try to find a solution for this (if we can find one)

Something along these lines:

http://www.isabellenhuette.de/fileadmin/pdf/Brochures/IPC_englisch.pdf

No idea how much they cost, and would need two of such devices...

Probably are simpler ways too, such as having a small shunt to drop a faction of voltage then compare that voltage to the incoming voltage, and thus you know the direction of current...

Its quite a clever question this, your dealing with multiple problems.

Really? I'd join in the discussion :) Even though I'm not likely to ever use one on a 17ft fletcher :D Oh and not to distract further from what is an awesome boat (Lucky so and so - admillington!!!)

Counting the minutes

Going to Essex Boat Yards on Friday to move over all the stuff from the old boat to the new - they are moored close to each other. And then off to Lymington on Saturday morning!

Williams has been fitted and looking forward to giving it a try:-
