My insurance renewal was last weekend, fed up with Traffords insisting I enter a marina on 1st Oct and no leeway at all, so decided to look around. Also cos of age of boat most insisted on a survey. Saw a few brokers recommended on here so phoned DRL Marine who gave me a quote of £290 but no survey required. I asked for a specimen policy document and written quote, neither of which appeared, but didn't think much more about it.

Also contacted KC Powell who were 70 quid cheaper but also needed a survey. Although not local they immediately knew exactly where I was talking about on the Exe which was impressive.

However decided to go with DRL to save on the survey cost so phoned on Monday and was told I was on cover and quote and proposal were in the post. By Friday I was more than a little concerned when nothing had materialised and wondered what sort of service I would get if I had to make a claim. So I then phoned KC Powell and proceeded with them and organised the survey.

This morning an envelope from DRL arrived with a cover note commencing not on Monday but Thursday and showing a premium of £343, £50 more than they quoted a week or so ago!! It's a damn good job nothing happened to the boat between Monday and Thursday when it appears I was uninsured!!

You can probably guess what I am going to suggest DRL do with their policy and service!!

Maybe just unlucky John, I have just insured with them in fact I think we both made enquiry at the same time on a past thread I started. I received an immediate written quote from them, took them up on it and have received the policy already.

Following with much interest since I too greatly resent being asked to fork out for a survey I don't want and don't need. Indeed, I would be quite happy to have insurance which specifically excluded claims for losses to my boat which were directly due to an inherent defect in my boat. (not the same as third-party only).

I note your two boats are very different (one sail, other obviously power) ... could this have some bearing on the particular insurers attitude?

Really don't know. But with their revised premium v the cost of a survey I'll be in pocket after less than 2 years. What I object to is being quoted one price and then asked to pay 20% more! In addition to not being insured when I was told I had cover.

Try SAGA for a quote, you have to be over 50 years young,I double checked the quote they gave me for a Jaguar 25 and was well pleased.Just bought the boat so had a survey anyway John L.

I had no problems with DRL - very helpful on the phone, cover note arrived two days later - well before the start of the cover period - and was the same price as the original quote even though I'd added an extra £500 worth of gear.

So - so far so good.
