Re: Genuine question

Ah, so here's an interesting point, Jimi. I'm trying to overtake you, so at some point, you're going to have my wake on your bow, unless I'm mistaken. So the question is partly about how I can get you into the smoothest part of my wake i.e. dead astern of me, and partly about how to pass astern of you if I'm the stand on vessel without causing excessive confusion.

Agreed, every harbour / marina should hand out a single leaflet to every motorboater. It could have the title "WAKE UP" or something and list the problems that a large wash creates. Another common situation is where there is a speed limit - say of 8knts - and many mobos thinks that since they stick to this then all is well with their wash, when it patently isn't with some hulls.

Getting their own back!

Towards the end of last year, we had just locked our sailing boat into Hythe Marina, and was trickling in towards our berth at literally 2kts. As we passed a "friend's" Princess 360 sat in it's berth, he switched on his loud hailer and bellowed out at maximum volume, "MIND YOUR WASH!!" It was a busy time in the marina, and everyone turned to stare at the "culprit". There was no point in protesting innocence, so I had to suffer in silence.......the B**ta*d!

Re: Getting their own back!

A few weeks ago I made a light hearted comment about the age old Raggies vs Mobo's thing. I had atacks on my character, my business and on the very embodiment of my soul.

I then profusely (spelling?) apologised and have now finished reading this entire thread and am dismayed at the number of people who verbally attacked me and my business for my mild comment, have shown their true colours.

We must all share this water, if you can't beat them join them. I am a MB owner, it's a slow boat but it's mine. I will adhere to the speed limits set and ColRegs, i will also have a very good camera and video camera, so if anyone, and I mean, ANYONE! threatens or puts my wife, my boat or my life in any danger regardless if they are Motorboats or Sailers, I will take the photographic evidence and have charges pressed against the guilty parties.

We all pay harbour dues......................Deal with it!!!!!!! don't whinge about it.

Enjoy the water! If it's crowded go deeper, I intend to!

I am very calm, I'm typing slowly, I have gone back and counted there is a total of 8 smiles, 2 from me, 2 from you the others were spread out. I don't think there was much humour there this time however I will now add some.

Well I bought a motor boat to motor, I cant slow down for every damn thing around me or there would be no point in having a boat that can do 35knots.

We motor you sail. The fault our boat has is that it kicks up wash, the fault your boat has is that you have to keep changing direction to go in a straight line therefore getting in everyones way. Lets not moan too much about it eh?

Joking aside yes it does happen and it happens to us motor boaters too and some boats kick up more wash at 2 knots than at 30. It happens just del with it. Swear at the guy who did it but dont start a fight betweeen stinkies and raggies to justify your frustration.

WE ARE ALL BOATER LETS UNITE......and tell the ones that are doing it wrong that they should maybe have a rethink. Both types of boating are different but we have one thing in common we all use boats.

Based at Sparkes, coming in to Chi harbour in crap (wind over tide) conditions in a 24 footer with a fair bit of windage is something I have had to do once or twice.

I never said it was easy. However, slowing down in poor conditions is not as scary as some would believe. I got caught out last season in a blow and found myself surfing down the backs of waves with NO steerage at 14-16 knots. The thought of slowing down to 7 or 8 knots was not a happy one, but turned out to be the right thing to do. Steerage, in a wobbly way, returned, and although I stared a few wave crests in the face, it ended happily.

Some try and steer "too hard" to maintain an accurate course at low speed. In fact, if you leave it largely alone, apart from small corrections to anticipate what is about to happen, the "average" course will be the right one, altho one with some oscillations. It goes really pear-shaped when the helmsman over corrects to compensate for what has just happened.

I don't know, you being an old hand I'd have thought you would know. Isn't something to do with optimal angle between your sails and the wind being the reason for tacking back and forth?

Re: Mobos get a Life (or sense) Part 2

Inconsiderate behavouir is unacceptable, but it also seems that maybe your choice of venue wasn't well thought out.
I don't know the medway, so maybe was only suitable place to race.
But having small boats racing in a main channel where no speed restrictions are in force, would not seem to be the wisest choice, as inevitably people will drive their boats at a speed that suits them.
Perhaps some large signs attached to the anchored boats asking people to politely slow down and watch their wake due to kids in dinghies or perhaps even notices at the marinas would have the desired effect of getting the message accross.
From what I've observed there always seems to be races at the busy periods, across main channels, and at the times people are normally either on their way out or returning from a day out , so inevitably there will be conflicts.
So perhaps some better communication would help, like advance notices saying racing at certain times at such and such a place, which would allow people to change their departure or return time or perhaps find an alternative to the main channels to race in.

Re: It must be me!

I was trying to give some of the sailors that might not have tried helming a motor cruiser an idea of what happens at different speeds, not to give advice to an obvious expert such as yourself.

Silly me, I was thinking that these forums were supposed to be about sharing information. I'll stick with sarcastic comments in future. /forums/images/icons/mad.gif.
