I broke the lockdown...and I’m pleased I did

The lockdown is governed by the law of the land. Within the law as drafted you are allowed to leave home if you have a “reasonable excuse”. Examples are given in the legislation of reasonable excuses but the list is not exclusive.

It would require a court case to decide if protecting property, such as a boat, is a reasonable excuse. There is a general lack of understanding of the law and people are jumping to conclusions / casting blame too easily. The law does not mention essential travel, key workers (that is linked to school attendance) or once a day exercise(England).

The law also allows someone to go to work if their job can not be done from home e.g: if I work in a Christmas Cracker factory I can still go to work. That is an economic not social health provision. If the politicians wanted to protect the NHS and save lives at any cost they would prohibit non essential work and pay the furlough costs. They have chosen not to do so.

I do not think that the OP did anything wrong, he was careful, maintained social distancing and only did the work necessary to protect his property. I suspect that a court would support that view but that is just an opinion.

The sooner the government starts treating the population like adults the better. If this situation continues long term the government needs the continued buy in of the people and blanket, nonsensical bans is not the way to do that.

There does seem to be more outrage towards one well informed forum member doing something in a sensible safe way but less about a tube train jam packed with commuters ?
What if he had an accident? What if you complied with lockdown and had a gas explosion at home ?
What ifs seem a little pointless ?

A&E and surgical wards in hospitals across the U.K. are very quiet, which makes you wonder why they are so jam packed normally.

I think, ordinarily, a lot of people do go to A&E unnecessarily. Or perhaps its just there isn't much option. Getting a GP appointment has been quite a challenge for some considerable time . We do need more clinics in the UK where you can promptly get help with minor issues . We also need to spend more on social care. All of these issues are pre-covid .

No one wants to go to hospital anymore for obvious reasons.
I understand lot of (almost all) surgery has been postponed . Which will almost certainly lead to deaths or , at best ,worsening of existing medical issues. Certainly waiting lists must be very long.

Well I respect your point but remain in camp B.

It’s like bringing a kid up.
Your job is to allow them just enough rope.
Too much rope and they hurt themselves.
Too little rope and they snap it and hurt themselves more.

I hadn’t been home for 7 weeks until Sunday. Staying in hotels with mostly NHS workers.
Now I’m home, it’s sunny, it’s a 20 minute cycle to my boat and I would remain isolated if I went there. I find it hard to respect that rule.
If I’d been home all that time I’d be going mad. As I’m sure many people are.
With that view of how rules should be treated/ignored, seems you already are.

All I can say is it’s a good job you did find the electrical fault .
Had you not a fire would have taken your boat and at least each one for and aft or your boat plus the 2 on your port side ( I know this boat and it’s location) .

My view is had this happened there would have been even a bigger public/ Fire/ Police/ Ambulamce/ Hamble River authorities etc etc gatherings probably a 100 people in total .

i have been working through this at many marinas , I can tell you all I hardly see a single soul , and the ones that are working in many marinas keep there distance from anyone and everyone, the Marina staff are very good accepting people need to work , there clients want work doing .

on a few boats this week I have not only carried out the service and repair work I have also adjusted lines and renders that were dragging in the water , I can’t see why the marina staff have not done this , but that’s another story I won’t criticise anyone .

Perhaps now the cold weather has gone there is no real requirement to run tube heaters and de humidifiers .

The main point of not visiting your boat is to avoid public gatherings , which makes me laugh when you see pics of all the key workers all stood clapping shoulder to shoulder on a Thursday evening , plus the amount on beaches and parks, streets on London , busses , trains and the tube.
That’s my view, let’s get on and as I’ve said in a previous post this situation we are all in doesn’t help with people falling out on here .
There is a difference between "people needing to work" & letting hoi poloi loose just because they have cabin fever.

It is likely that in the process of travelling there could be a possibility of touching surface or some other means of picking up or transmitting the virus. eg opening a gate in the marina , fuelling the vehicle used for travel.

This is why travelling is meant to be restricted and we should Stay at Home , Protect the NHS, Save Lives.
Perhaps you haven't yet understood the purpose of that message.

If everyone literally stayed at home for a couple of months the virus would be gone. However that isn't possible so the next best thing is to stay at home as much as is possible and not try to find some loophole in the regulations and advice that the government have provided.
It’s likely that there is a possibility. Hmmmmmm.
I have understood it.
I don’t agree with it. I mean I don’t completely agree with it. I agree with what it’s trying to do of course.
