Beat ya :D

The steering seems to be working on the vid:confused:

I dont think there is anything wrong with the boat... Crew Failure.....

Someone has had the foresail off... he was running under number 3.... and the main appears to be bagged but the bag is damaged...

Maybe they got knocked down?

Where's the storm jib n trysail that the skip was so excited about on Twit?
.
I know vid is always deceptive, but with the exception of the view over the LBs bow early on, those conditions really look like wind over tide in the Solent.

Slight thread drift here. This is fascinating stuff, the speed of information being displayed on this thread: The AIS route, Twitter, RNLI video. Its true, "You can run, but you can hide!"

perhaps power did fail leaving the autohelm clutch still engaged (for example)

Can that happen? I'd assume it's an electromagnetic thing that would automatically release if it lost power, but I've never really investigated. Anyone know?

(I realise this was just an example of a possibility, not what happened in this case)

BBC news has just said a sailor has died after a wave hit his vessel in the English channel! Is this the same incident?

The crewman who died was one of three injured men who were rescued by Falmouth coastguards from the Annie PG in the Channel. The other two men were taken to the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro.

BBC... different incident.

the LB was called @ 05.30 ish.
that video it was daylight & the yacht had power
the LB skipper had great skill comming along side as he did & controlling the inisial tow.
also no 5m swell

The lifeboat in the video is the Dover Lifeboat, which launched at around 8am to assist the Dungeness Lifeboat (which had launched at 0530, and is the boat visible in the background).

Perhaps someone who uses twitter (what ever that is) could go on there & invite him to this forum to give us an explanation of his plans & intentions. Could be interesting.
I've been thinking that as well! Who knows?
Maybe - the Skipper was taking the crew on Adventure Training!
Maybe - he'll get proven innocent in court?
Maybe - pigs can fly upwind into a F8!!!!
I wonder if he donates to the RNLI...

Just been on local news, reported by RNLI crew who attended that helmsman of Vortex was thrown against wheel, which either broke or badly bent it!

Bit more than that but point taken. Must have been a very weak crew if they couldn't handle such conditions.

Point is this is not a crew ... they are paying guests on a book-a-berth trip.

Taken from the HL website "Our mile builder cruises prove very popular with novice and experienced sailors alike"

So there is every chance that the crew had little or no experence and had no idea what they were getting into, let alone have the strentgh and experence to cope with it.
