Reports of crew being lifted off a yacht transiting from Southampton to London

Trust that crew and the rescuers are all OK, as its absolutely horrible down at Dover at the moment.

Begs the question what on earth were they doing out there? This weather has been flagged up for days.

Must admit I've not been following the forecasts but if the weather was known to be coming (it must surely have been) setting off for that trip was completely crazy and highly irresponsible - perhaps actionable for negligence as it was presumably a commercial enterprise? How much would forumites want to pay for that little trip in mid-winter even with a benign forecast? Me -nothing!

Damn this social media, can't even have a private shipwreck nowadays!

:D

I am waiting for his update!

Still, appears to have been aware that he could expect bad weather since the 29th.... Why didnt they leave early?

Frankly, with a weak crew... and he knew it might be force 10... thats a bit bonkers.

Sailing Boy implies a young gun ho chap, he looks middle aged and bald. Should have known better then. I jest of course! Media today makes the barn door so big, that its hard to miss when the mud starts getting flung.

Quite frankly I wish to see Liquid Sailing charged with the costs for that rescue.

I know we have all done daft things and some of us have been unfortunate enough to require the services of the RNLI and/or Coastguard Helicopter. I'm all for "free" rescue services to save life and limb, but I expect skippers to CONSIDER the implications of their decisions to put to sea ... it's not just their own life at risk - it is that of all those aboard PLUS those who will launch to rescue them when things go wrong.

Nobody normally goes sailing expecting F10 ... Another few hours would've seen the front pass over and they could've carried on their merry way.
IMHO this accident was entirely avoidable - and only occurred due to the skippers decision (under time pressure?) to sail.

if it was me.....

I'd have gone into Eastbourne...... probably...... Does anyone know what the entrance to Eastbourne is like in a strong SW? I know it's shallow. Mind you, I'd have gone into Newhaven or Brighton if before it got really bad (both not good in a SW IIRC) . Hell, I'd have anchored in chichester to let the worst of it blow over. At least you could explain to whoever had them under time pressure that you'd tried.

Seems a lesson learned the hard way there.

Sorry if I saw a F9 forecast, let alone a F10, I wouldn't even "try".

I would give no explanation, because none should be needed.

Getting caught out in a storm which wasn't forecast is one thing. Going out when you know there is a storm coming is something completely different.

If the boat had to be there by a certain time they should have left earlier.

The more I look into this the angrier I get. It just beggars belief.

Wind now 19 kn gusting 25, clear blue skies, channel still looks lumpy though. Dover opened about 3 hrs ago.

12 hours skulking in Eastbourne or Boulogne and all would have been well.

Re the AIS data, if I'm reading the data correctly, it looks like the AIS stopped transmitting at 0352 and re-commenced transmitting at 0913. That seems strange to me, given that it could have been an aid to location in the rescue.
