Reports of crew being lifted off a yacht transiting from Southampton to London

Trust that crew and the rescuers are all OK, as its absolutely horrible down at Dover at the moment.

Begs the question what on earth were they doing out there? This weather has been flagged up for days.

Elsewhere, seven people became stranded on a yacht five miles off Dover after the vessel lost power in 50-knot winds.

Dungeness and Dover lifeboats were called at 05:15 GMT to help the vessel named Liquid Vortex, which was on its way from Southampton to London.

Five of the crew were suffering from seasickness and one crewman had a possible injury to his jaw and ribs after a fall.

Not only do they put their own lives at risk, but also the lives of the lifeboat crews sent out to rescue them.

It's a school boat

They're blog was recently offering the sale of the last berth for this trip (presumably to get to the boat show) so possible that time pressure pushed them to keep going.

Soton to London - maybe a boat show exhibit and they HAD to be there?

According to the BBC:

"Elsewhere, seven people became stranded on a yacht five miles off Dover after the vessel lost power in 50-knot winds. "

Demasted then?

(Anyway, whatever the reason, it's good to know the crew were all rescued.)

Commercial considerations by Hot liquid sailing overiding good sense?

Was there enough time to get around from yesterday afternoon to Ramsgate, before this lot hit?

Once they were around the corner the wind would be up but how would the sea state be?

What was the forecast on the morning of the first... as from their tweets that would be when they appeared to be making the decision...

I was watching Liquid Vortex on AIS tracking last night. It left Southampton just after 15:00 yesterday. At 21:00 last night it was approx 20 miles west of Beachy Head showing speed in excess of 9 knots. Wind speed at the time was over 40 knots from about 260 deg, I expected it to go into Eastbourne but no at 03:00 am it went past Eastbourne doing 12 knots! At 09:00 this morning it was north of Dover (Dover port had been closed). Some time before mid day the AIS signal disappeared. RNLI Lifeboat 17-09 was in the area, Lifeboat 17-09 is now doing 21 knots heading for Dover.

From the Kent Messanger...

Four people have been airlifted to hospital after their boat ran into difficulties in strong winds off the Kent coast.

An RNLI lifeboat from Dungeness was launched at 5.10am to help the crew of the stricken yacht.

Rescuers battled 60mph winds and swells of up to five metres to reach the crew, who had radioed for help while close to St Margaret's Bay.

A second lifeboat from Dover, an RAF helicopter and the coastguard were also involved in the rescue.

The four crewmen airlifted to hospital are being treated at the QEQM hospital, Margate, for severe sea sicknesss.

The yacht, which had been travelling from Southampton to London, was towed back to Ramsgate harbour.

The Dover Lifeboat also took a trip on AIS up to the Brake Sand then Ramsgate so looks like something hit the brake Sand and was then towed to Ramsgate? Pure speculation of course
