Sorry, Stingo, can't agree with you on this one. Think it through.
Why would you choose non-lethal over lethal defence? The only reasons I can think of are: 1) the risk of getting it wrong (killing someone who wasn't really a threat) or 2) hoping that you don't need to kill a pirate in order to dissuade them.
If they are not real pirates, you will have pissed them off, but at least you won't have killed them - so if the local authorities do get involved, you won't be in so much trouble.
If they are real pirates, either you disable them (all, completely) or you don't.
If you don't (and I have seen videos of some people fighting hard after being repeatedly sprayed in the face at close range), you will be dealing with pissed off (probably heavily armed) pirates who have just been assaulted. Good luck to you.
If you do disable them - they might still unload in your direction anyway - see above. In any event, how long would they be disabled - half an hour? How far could you get in that time? Don't you think they might just come after you and start shooting well before they got in range of your pepper gun?
As someone said, I wouldn't bring a gun unless I was prepared to shoot to kill, and use it first. I'm not, so I wouldn't take one.
IMHO if you are not prepared to deal with a situation escalating to its natural conclusion, don't start the escalation.
I really dont see you disabling ALL the pirates in one go with the pepper spray. Some will be in their boat some aboard yours, out in the open air its not going to be 100% effective.
What do you do next? They will have real weapons that can kill you through the hull if needed even a steel hull.
I would see the point in a small hatch in the coachroof you could fire several red flares into the air, Or a rip cord that could let go Orange smoke from the stern..This may worry them that help may be on the way.
The pepper spray would be fine to deter thieves or muggers, against people with firearms it would not really be a good idea ,unless as a totally last resort.
I do have experience of using both sprays CS and pepper, and also firearms.

It's OK for all you ex-servicemen who have killed already. You won't hesitate for the instant that gets the rest of us killed.
If you are going to show a weapon, you have to be prepared to use it before anything else happens - even if it transpires it could never have happened....if you see what I mean.

This is a fundamental point. having the training, that not only allows you to pull the trigger , but also gives you the background to know that puling the trigger is the only remaining choice.
Don't know if your missing the point, But lets put it this way
the guy/guy's coming to rob you are probably Psyched up on drink/ drugs and are totally unpredictable and high on adrenaline.
You on the other hand will be sh*t scared at the time and with all the practice you have done under calm conditions will be wasted because you may not be able to shoot straight. (Its not like the movies)
There are possibly posters that have answered that are trained in firearm use.
Its easy to say " I'll blow their effin head off" but that aint reality, and no disrespect to those that say they would, generally those that really would don't talk about it.
A poster mentioned Venezuela, Yes their are bandits with guns here, and most of them are out of their sculls with drugs, and they do a hold up and only discharge their gun in panic shooting wild and someone catches the bullet.
Their are also "Hit men" that will stop a car and one shot to the head.
My advise to anyone Is to accept the situation, don't provoke them in any way, don't carry a firearm, and when they have gone you will be ALIVE to spout about all the things you would have done if you had had a gun.
Of course the problem is maybe they want to take your boat on the high seas and tip you over the side, but sailing in those waters is it not better to be accompanied by another yacht.
It isn,t only in Johns part of the world, wintering in Waterford last year, we were boarded at 3a.m. by five East Europeans who had already that night broken into 15 boats. Our dog woke me, very fortunately they took off when asked to "f... off" but otherwise the pepper gun may have had the desired effect. The Garda and our selves did manage to catch them by the way
