Hi all
Yesterday as I passed the boom of our Westerly Longbow to my wife on the jetty, we heard the splash of something expensive( it's always expensive ) fall into the water.
It was what I think is called the gooseneck(?). It's the piece of metal with one hole horizontally drilled and another vertically, which with two pins fastens the boom to the roller reefing shaft which goes through the mast. I'm sorry if this isn't a very good discription but it's not a part of the boat that you take a lot of notice of under normal circumstances.
Anyway... does anyone know where I might be able to get a new/secondhand one from? Or even what its proper discription is might help...
Please help if you can, Easter is only a couple of weeks off and it's going to be hard to sail without this thingy!!!!
Cheers
Ian

Try posting this on the Westerley website - usually lots of bits & pieces there.

You might be able to rescue it if you try fishing with a big magnet on some line if the water isn't too deep. As you say,it is always something expensive or vital that goes over the side, like your only spanner of a certain size.

Good hunting!

Hi

It would be quicker, and cheaper, to get a diver to retrieive the missing part and it is going to fit correctly.

Hi
If you know the original manufacturerof the spars, have a look on their website.
For instance Proctor & Kemp Masts are now part of Seldens & they carry spares for most of their range.[www.seldenmast.com]

If its 316 stainless then a magnet won't be much help. It shouldn't be too difficult to find a replacement, or if you can find one to copy then have one welded up. Should only be a few quid if you ask round and find someone to do it in their lunch time.

I'd also recommend Selden - they were able to supply me with a replacement gooseneck when mine broke, even though my spars came from a different maker.

I took my boom off this weekend, and it sounds just like yours - proctor round-the-boom reefing. Fortunately I have the thingy in my car - I reckon it is stainless (non-magnetic) - I can make a dimensioned drawing of it if you like.

It is basically a piece of square bar with a hole through each end at right angles - the middle of an elongated universal joint.

Hope this helps.

i broke my gooseneck by following the advice of a PBO column (scandalise the main to take the drive out of it - gooseneck not designed to lift that far) found spar manufacturer from the plate on the mast, phoned them up & ordered part, fitted it the following weekend. bingo.
