The Red Duster brigade did indeed show up there incompetence in the crap they posted.
Whereas the blue duster mob showed it on the water ... ;)

Not true of course; it's just that when a bluey makes a spectacular cockup, we notice the ensign. One of the best bits of boat handling I ever saw was a gin palace sporting a defaced blue, so ticking all the boxes, leaving Bembridge several years ago. No more than a couple of metres clearance to the six-deep raft ahead and astern and he took the boat out sideways with no fuss, turned in his own length and went off.

Do not forget that collisions at sea when both boats are not anchored or prevented from action - both boats are liable as the stand on is also required to take such action as deemed necessary in event give way vessel fails to act sufficiently.
There are no 100 : 0 % decisions in this ..
None? What if the pi$$ed skipper passing in a narrow channel falls against the tiller as she comes abeam of you? ColRegs are good but not perfect.

I really don't understand the "taxing" and "red tape" argument.

Broadly speaking I support the training and certification of all water users, how you manage that is another matter.

PWC, JetSkies call them what you will are causing more and more of a menace to other water users. Be that buzzing round moorings or zooming passed swimmers at speed. I fear the day when a Corner's Court or a fatal accident inquiry in Scotland asks why was the rider of the PWC not trained and the impact that has on the water using community. Read any MAIB report and they do state the qualifications of those involved. I wonder is dulls sees those reports as red tape?

I wonder what the investigation and report on the latest PWC / boat incident in Menai will show as root cause.
Very sad for all involved.

I've recently spent 3 years sailing in Australia. To operate any boat under motor (a few minor exceptions) one needs a boat licence, a very easy process. The on-water evaluation was part of our comp crew and then a half day classroom for the theory. Covers rules of the road, safety, weather etc at a very basic level. A separate test is required for the jet ski extension.

All vessels also have to be state registered (and federally registered if going overseas)

A fairly simple and straightforward process

Insurance is not compulsory, but you won't get in to a marina without it.

You need a radio licence, but they have a simplified, non GMDSS exam for VHF and optional extension for HF whilst in Australian waters.

Latvia has similar ... anything over 2.4m ... if it has engine over 4hp ... then it has to be registered.

Person needs Licence (and CEVNI if the wish to boat on a river etc).

Simple to get ..

What, aside from a buoyancy-aid, isn't subject to (UK) maritime law?

Is my 2.4m inflatable with plastic oars subject to the law?

If I ran down a jet-skier in my 27ft yacht, would I be subject to (UK) maritime law?

Anyway, seems extremely unlikely to happen, ISTR a link a while ago to a gov statement saying basically the accident rate is very good so they weren't looking further into compulsory training. Certainly just as many if not more muppets on the water in the countries with compulsory training.

Maybe there is.
