French yotties use a \"W- Sea\"

Whilst on my recent trip to Cherbourg and St. Vaast, I witnessed my first experience of how the nautical French relieve themselves - in public!
Last Monday, a French yacht came into St. Vaast, around 1030, as the gate opened, and berthed two pontoons from myself.
I was sitting in the inside helm, surveying the world, as one does, whilst SWMBO cleared up after our usual late breakfast. The new arrivals had been tied up for no more than 5 mins, when one of the crew, sauntered along the pontoon, towards the sharp end, and stood there, facing, the boat, and me, with his back to the harbour wall. I said to SWBO, "If I didn't know any better, this chap is having a wee in the marina" She looked and agreed. His hands were by his crotch, and he was looking down. He looked up, and must have seen me, but just continued. Now at this stage, there was a bit of a blustery wind, so he must have sprayed his boat. After a minute or so, up comes the zip, and back into the boat.

I was quite prepared to accept this was a one off, and there was a queue for the heads, but you can imagine my surprise, two days later, another French yacht, on the same berth, went one better.
This time the man, again obviously desperate, went to the stern, braced himself against the guard rail, down with the zip, and peed over the side. However, there was another difference. Although possibly out of deference to me, who again was watching the world go by, had turned his back to me, but was on full view of the harbour. I suppose he thought there were far enough away as not to see much.

Imagine my surprise next morning when all the crew were going to the showers, one of them does it on the pontoon.

Have I lead a sheltered life and this is common practise? Or is this a rare occurrence.

I have to say, the crew members of both these boats were in their early to late fifties, or even older. One often sees this practise in the countryside, but not on full view in a marina. Don't French yachts have a sea toilet?- maybe the cheaper ones don't

I would be interested to see if anybody else has experienced this - seeing it, that is.

Stuart,

Yes regular thing, we saw it a lot when we were down toward La Rochelle. It's part of French life - I've often seen it even when the crews on the yacht are mixed sexes - and yes we British do lead sheltered lives!..................and now, where's my cup of cocoa number 1? It's dashed cold out here you know!

Reason being that you not allowed to use the sea toilet in marinas. I pee over the side some times. But usually after dark..../forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Is there any difference about peeing in a sea toilet in the marina, or peeing in the marina itself?

I have to say, I saw nothing in the info I was presented with at St. Vaast to say that the use of marine toilets was banned. The only notice I was given was about rubbish, & the use of the skips for disposal of it. I would think that most people use a sea toilet in the marina, as long as it only for a wee. I mean let's face it. What could be more blatant than peeing into the marina in broad daylight. I'm sure, that if those French yachts had marine toilets they would use them.

Yes i know you are not allowed to use toilets in marinas, So i thought the same would apply for peeing off the pontoons.

So whats the diference between peeing in the sea and peeing down the sea toilet. It all finishes in the same place as far as I can see.

Exactly!

So, why not be more descrete and use the toilet? Or do you think that the bubbles of gas/air given off by the toilet is more noticeable than the gentle water on water action. Mind you, if you did it from the flybridge, now that would be noticed.

Re: French yotties use a \"W- Sea\"

I'm amazed you'd expect anything else from the French. Whenever I've been to France they're peeing all over the place, particularly on the side of the road. In fact this reminds me of my youth. Mate of mine was relieving himself in the bushes on the way back from the pub and was spotted by a passing policeman. The copper said to him "where do you think this is, France?".

Be careful about peeing over the side of the boat. Robert Maxwell used to do this regularly aboard his yacht the Lady Ghislaine. For some reason you are more prone to having a heart attack whilst having a wee. It is thought that Maxwell fell over the side as a result of a heart attack whilst having a wee.

Another thing that comes to mind is a scene from Only fools and Horses when the doctor asks Del: "Do you have any trouble passing water?" to which Del replies "I sometimes feel a bit giddy passing Tower Bridge".

Ah But. If you are a truck driver, you are allowed to pee on the front nearside wheel. Old law from way back.

I thought truck drivers did it in empty pop bottles before chucking them in the central reservation.

Youre quite right, I should have expected it, but having never seen it before in a marina, it came as quite a shock.

I was in Lezardrieux las year and apart from a French family from hell, causing mayhem on the pontoons, no peeing in the river. Although I did when we took the RIB upstream. But I did discretely .
I still suspect it is the older generation who do it. Unless of course, you know different.
