I am looking for advice and help.
I have a volvo penta D9a 500 in a fishing boat, engine has a little over 2300hrs so not a lot of hours on her and ordinarily runs like a watch.
Due to little use, batteries went flat some time back, batteries were removed found to be in order after charging and refitted, engine started and ran up with no issue.
The next time the engine was to be started there was nothing , no dash , nothing.
Thinking that the batteries were flat again, they were again removed to charge up , but before being charged were tested and found to be nearly fully charged , so not a battery issue..they were charged up anyway to make sure and refitted.
Upon refitted correctly there was nothing no cranking , no dash lights ...it was as though the batteries were completely flat again.
Power for the engine and evc c system is taken from starter and that was found to have correct 24v across it.

A marine engineer attended , but because he didn't have code reader and the fact that there was no power to evc and panel , no codes could be read in any case.
The engineer was buising himself making several calls asking for advice to his contact.
Engine circuit breaker tested and in order.
When testing by the engineer the dash panel did come back to life momentarily with green data light on evc but no cranking, but went dead again.
No the engineer has taken away my ecu, evc and hcu to test but has had them for over 4 months and I have been trying to retrieve them , the excuse given is that its old tec and difficult to test.

Any help and advice from anyone would be great.
But from the last time the engine started to not starting nothing had changed, no wiring removed ..
Help!

First of all do you have the numbers off the units he took, you need them back and fitted then get VP engineer to test. You need the units back what is his excuse , is he local to you. Go and visit him with your mate.

Bit late now, but with a possible EVC issue you should have gone straight to a VP dealer. They have the equipment and experience to test the components in situ. I cannot imagine what an independant guy is going to do to test them in any useful way off the boat, unless he has a contact within the VP dealer network. Get them back ASAP, as they will be thousands to replace.

Where are you based? And can you get the units back untested, or is your engineer refusing to give them back?

I’ve tried to PM you it’s not letting me, but if you can get them to me (Essex UK) then I’ll certainly take a look and feel confident I’d get you some answers
