What has "the number of lifeboat crew I know" got to do with it?
I think you'll find that it was not me that "lashed out" but previous respondants. I am just sticking up for the guy after being appalled at some of the responses he got to a post that was clearly aimed at helping people and sharing his experiences that I, for one, found intersting.
After my first, and hopefully last, pan pan it was me that felt humbled.
Anyway, time for another glass now :)

I was trying to point out that if we accept 100's of people connected with the RNLI on here, not that you know, but on here, only one feels the need to preach about safety to us.

Seconded
What some still don't appreciate is that a lot of people read these forums without actually posting , the lurkers may well be total beginners so why should anyone assume that most people know what they're doing . At least three 'lurkers' have e mailed me in the past , freely admitting that they don't know as much as me about sailing , and I know next to bugger all /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif so they need all the help they can get . Keep the posts coming is my vote

Point taken but surely anyone is free to post their opinions and views, as we are now doing?
I don't think anyone should feel they have the perogative to "accept" anyone and no one forces anyone else to read any thread posted.
To tell a poster to "piss off you're really getting up my nose" is hardly friendly or helpfull to anyone.
As a sea going boat user, safety is paramount to me and we, in my opinion, can never take on enough advice.

Well said Dog,.... it is a shame that some folk on here take the huff when their view is not agreed with by others. My main criticism was to LBJ initial post was that nearly every week over the past month or so LBJ has put up a post about what a great job his Swanage Lifeboat has done.....As I have said before having given 15 years of my life to the RNLI and prior to my retirement served as a 2nd Coxwain we were happy to go out, do the job and head off home without singing or looking for praise....I know for sure the preaching that LBJ does on this site is cringed at by certain old salts involved with the RNLI......For those that are happy to read and learn that is great, I have no problem with that but what would happen if every enthusiastic crewmember from every lifeboat statipon in Britain was to preach daily on this forum!!

A policeman advises "check your tyre pressures before driving down to the boat, because otherwise you might skid on a wet patch and kill yourself."

Any more safety tips?

Sorry, miss quoted, pissing me off and getting up my nose.

Isn't this getting a bit silly? Lets not lose our sense of humour and spirit of tolerance.

My point is, that anyone is free to post what they like, no one has to read a particular thread.

Good debate though /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

yes but just to be clear, the number of views is not the number of different people who have viewed. So John will himself have viewed the thread x times, each one counts, yourself, me a couple, several others.

I wouldnt like to hazard a guess as to how many different people have read it, just wouldnt want anybody to misinterpret the numbers. We couldn't have that on a subject related to the RNLI, could we !

Anyway, there is no such thing as bad publicity, or so we are told.

BigNick you have got it completely wrong, to the RNLI we are all one breath away from being a casualty.

As far as the RNLI Department of Pre-Rescue is concerned this thread represents 1264 salvations.

There are many on boats / beaches / etc. that consider they are experienced ........ then one day they make a mistake.

We all do it .... we all make that stupid error ...

LBJ - ignore the "experts" - many an Expert has run onto the rocks. The Titanic was Unsinkable ...

Me ? I choose what to read ... and that includes links .. so doesn't bother me at all. If another chooses to open your link and then finds he doesn't like it - then why moan or insult ?

Sorry but it is not just twister ken and starboard .I totally agree with starboards comments(exept I think the Waveney was the best ever) I had 23 years lifeboating and yes we just got on with it, not Looking for people to blow sunshine up our arses. The institution has a whole department dedicated to sea safety and beach safety and I am a volunteer within that organization. In my veiw LBJ should continue with his posting if he feels he must. But dont be patronizing. The coxwains I served under would hang me out to dry if I had a blog similar to LBJ.
