LBJ ... I think that if you contributed to other threads that are not nessersarily LB related then your links back to your blog may not attract the same negativity. Unfortunately, to contribute to other threads you need to sign your life over to IPC ... It is a painless procedure and only involves being surgically attached to a computer ... /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Isnt this just a simple take it or leave it situation ... like most of the internet?

I found it interesting, and a welcome reminder .... there but for the grace of God, and all that.

There will be a lot of people here who may well avoid getting caught out in the same way if they read the blog.... others know it instinctively.

We can all block someone who gets up our noses.

...........perhaps some lessons to learn from this?

One lesson might be the definition of the word "casualty"....

I thought quite a bit after reading the responses to your message and I can't for the life of me see what all the fuss is about. Your message is to help, not hinder and certainly not to sell. When I click on the Active Topics button, I get a list of stuff. I read the things I might find of interest. My choice. Lets not forget nobody 'owns' these forums, do they?
My view is keep up the good work, thank you.

Nothing against you personally, but I think you can assume that everyone likely to be reading Scuttlebutt knows about offshore breezes. As someone else said advice like that might be better on a dinghy sailors or lilo users forum.

OTOH war stories about the best thing to do when it goes titzup on a sailing yacht would be most welcome (to me, at least).

I suspect that this is an assumption which is categorically untrue.

On the subject of titsup war stories - a lifeboat shout is somebodys' war story isnt it.

I, for one, have no objection to having it made easy to read the blog now and then.

For Gods' sake, if you think LBJ only posts about his blog, turn off his posts - it aint rocket science.

Part of the job today is raising awareness of sea safety issues, our DI and DDI make this clear on a regular basis (and they are very happy with the message of the blog).

[/ QUOTE ]
You don't seem to appreciate that people have a saturation point regarding health & safety advice, therefore it is important to target information selectively.

No one has mentioned it yet but I think one reason your post irked some is that you didn’t bother to indicate why people should visit your site on this occasion. People then felt they had been duped into reading advice more appropriate beach holidaymakers or rookie dinghy sailors.

But please keep us posted on events relevant to forum users.

the dinghy made it back safely and the paddlers were being blown down the shore not off it and would, it would appear, also have got there albeit a bit down.

the lessons are dinghies capsize then get righted then sail off
its not easy paddling ashore in an offshore breeze and tyou can get blown down a bit

I know the coastguard has get somoene to attend as you never know and disaster could have struck
]but what are the lessons learn't
never go to sea in dinghy or rubber duck in an offshore breeze?

All of us may one day be really glad of the RNLI .[--word removed--] does happen even to the experienced /carefull. This is why I am reluctant to dampen LBJs enthusiasm ,

For the above reasons I find it difficult to say I agree with Twister Ken,but I do.

Keep posting, I need all the help I can get, and if I can learn from others mistakes rather than my own, it is normally much cheaper !

Keep posting. Nothing is more dangerous than over-confidence and reminders of human fallibility can help us keep safe. Not everybody on the forum has boundless experience. The audience seems to cover the full range of skills and experience. If you aren’t interested don’t follow the link – it isn’t hard to bypass a post.

Sorry LBJ if I have ruffled your feathers.....I guess up here north of the border we just get on with the job!!! tending not to suffer fools gladly ( not that I am implying you are a fool of course!) At the end of the day if nothing else you have probably got a few more punters interested in the Swanage RNLI web site! As for were I was 2nd Cox it was Troon, back in the good old days of the only descent lifeboat the RNLI produced ( though I guess my views are biased) the Arran Class..

I read the blog after seeing the comments. I can't see anything wrong with it. It doesn't come across as lecturing at all to me. Well done and thanks for doing the lifeboat work.

Paul,

Please don't worry, you haven't ruffled my feathers at all. I have enjoyed following this thread today a great deal, I've learnt much.

I must say that I have been suprised by some of the opinions and the bluntness with which they have been expressed (I am active on several other forums and have never met with this lack of community spirit elsewhere). Nevertheless, as I say, I've enjoyed reading folks comments.

My problem now of course if whether to continue to post similar sorts of posts in the future. By my count 21 seperate people have responded, 10 positively, 9 negatively and 2 kind of sitting on the fence. That leaves another 900 odd who have read the thread but not commented, therefore I don't know how they feel.

Now, I don't like polls at all, however, perhaps this is a time to use one. Do I or don't I post like this in future? No skin off my nose..........I don't do this for me but for the enjoyment/interest of others. Your call, more than 50% negative and I'll hold back, likewise more 50% positive and I'll take that as a green light and ignnore future negative comments.

Best wishes

John

Due to the nature of this forum there will be hundreds of people who have been or are crew on a lifeboat. How many do you know of?

one, and now two. Do you see my point?

I have had a snip at this blog in the past as he was in my opinion naming and shaming the casualties, but he has stopped that and for that I thank him.

I did not have a problem with this thread, but I do understand 100% where Paul and Ken are coming from, being on the crew should make you humble rather than preachy. It is one thing having a go in the crew room but airing your opinion makes many wonder of your agenda.

Nothing to fume about, we are all entitled to an opinion, agree or disagree, but don't lash out because people will never agree with you!
