I know Almerimar, because my ship was in that harbour for quite some time. I used my mobile telephone while there and assume that that means that there is WIFI.
Almerimar is a holiday-village in the municipality of El Ejido. El Ejido is the center of the plastic covered horticulture in southern Spain. There is a low lying area of appr. a kilometer wide along the coast, then a ridge of ten to twenty meters and next a plain covered by plastic.
The harbour itself is OK, but there is little activity in winter, because there are not many guests. There is a golf-course, which as far as I know, belongs to one of the hotels. In the village are shops, which are open all year round, but rather expensive. Close to El Ejido, at appr. 5 km from the harbour, is a LIDL (cheap!!). When I wass there, about four years ago, there were busses going from the harbour to El Ejido. There are frequent bus-connections from El Ejido to Almeria.
The workers in the horticulture are mainly immigrants, which causes social stresses and some years ago resulted in riots. I don't think one notices these things in the marina.
The biggest town in the area is Almeria, where there is also an airport with connections to Madrid and probably to northern european countries, like Germany and England. The distance from El Ejido to Almeria is appr 25-30 km. There is a freeway from west of El Ejido via Almeria to Murcia, Alicante, Valencia and Barcelona, which is a toll-road from Alicante on to the north.
Almeria has a very modern combined bus/train station. There is a train-connection from Almeria to Madrid and bus connections to many different towns in Spain, like Madrid and Barcelona. One should be able to obtain information about frequencies and prices via internet. The spanish railway company is called RENFE. Check internet for the busses.
f you have special questions, please send them to me as a personal message and I will try to answer them.
Henk.

Uhhm, no, mobile phone and Wifi competely different. Phones connect to mobile telephone masts, and are common worldwide. Wifi is wireless connection at very short range to internet access using wireless connection for computers so they can obtain internet access, and not very common yet.

Your write up of Almerimar is excellent though. Can you do similar for other ports you've visited?

Almirimar has changed a lot in recent years - I wintered there a couple of times when Henk above did and it was as he discribed. Now it has been discovered!!!! It is bustling and busy - full of resturants, shops and chandelry places - You now need never leave the place if you are wintering there. Word of warning - if you want to haul there you need to book very early indeed! Not sure about staying afloat. There is another yard/marina also in Almaria bay - cannot remember the name - and that is more or less it for the Costa del Sol or Costa Brava. Very difficult to find secure winter haulage facilities in the Western Med - Next best is Malta and there are some good Greek yards. Land is mainly too expensive to put aside for hauling boats.........

I have been in both Aguadulce and Almerimar and prefer Aguadulce. because it is much closer to Almeria. There is a rock, hill, mountain, whatever you want to call it, directly behind the marine in Aguadulce, which reflects the heat and causes the marina to be hot in summer, but it is an advantage in winter. The marina in Aguadulce is very close to the village/town and to the normal spanish activities of bars, cafes and restaurants. If one wants to have an idea of Spain, as I do, I would go to Aguadulce.
About 3 miles W. of Aguadulce is another small marina in Roquetas de Mar. I have never been there, but met people who wintered there. The marina is much smaller than the other two, but quiet and close to the center of Roquetes.
In Almerimar and Aguadulce there is a hard. The one in Aguadulce is much bigger than the one in Almerimar. Roquetas does not have a hard. The people I met, came to Almerimar to get their ship on the dry to antifoul, but prefered the quietness of the marina in Roquetas.

Getting back to the wifi question. I'm not sure about Almerimar but an e-mail to info@marina-almerimar.com should provide an answer.

If coming down from the South of France to Almerimar then check-out wlan-international - they operate wifi in a number of Spanish marinas.

I can confirm that Marina de Denia has wifi - I'm sitting in the cockpit in the marina using it!!!

Re: Marinas with Wifi

Currently in Almerimar (well the boat is, we're going down next week). No WIFI when we were there last (November). Now has good cheap supermarket on site. as well as shops, restaurants and sociable cruising community. Intenet cafe on the marina at sensible cost too, approx. 2 euros an hour. Not a problem strolling round there in the sunshine!

Re: Marinas with Wifi

I just got my WiFi adapter on trial basis and I'm not sure how to connect while cruising. In Ayamonte, Spain, where I am now, there is an Internet place that will let you connect for 30Euros for two weeks, but once I leave here, what do I do? How will I find other places? Can I connect for a day only? Are there any free hot spots along the southern Spanish coast or do you usually have to pay? How much?

Re: Marinas with Wifi

Hi could not help but have a look on the forum regarding the Almerimar marina. The answer is that there is no dedicated wifi internet access in the port. However, the port is surounded by appartment blocks many with wireless access. A program such as network stumbler will find you excellent wireless internet in certain berths. There are two internet cafes, one near the boat yard and the other in darcena 1... (the first basin).

Almerimar has changed a lot in more recent years and whilst is still surrounded by plastic from the crop growers, is a thriving port with 1300 berths. A daily crusers net on VHF 67 where you can obtain interesting and useful facts about buses social events etc. Many people winter here each year and there is a great yachting community.

The boat yard will not alow you to work on your boat, but a lift, clean and antifouling is reasonable. The well stocked chandlery has recently changed hands and now owned by a young british couple who are very helpful.

Almerimar is very popular with the Spanish at the weekends and can become busy, however it retains local charm and is free from Costa Del Sol prices and droves of yobish youths.

Regards
